Leonardslee Gardens: Landscape Garden and lake views
For a few weeks in May of each year, Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex, UK, erupt into
a spectacular display of the most amazing color combinations of flowering
rhododendrons and azaleas. The green, wooded valley gardens then turn into a place of
vibrant colors and breathtaking beauty. Filled with the scent of the massed azalea
plantings the whole area becomes a forest paradise. Visitors have often described its
awesome colors and tranquility as being like ‗heaven on earth‘.

This photograph includes a wide spectrum of stunning colors from beautiful azaleas in
full bloom in May.

For many years, tens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the ‗picture postcard‘ qualities
of this Grade 1 historic garden. Unfortunately, the gardens are now closed to the public as
they have been sold to an international businessman.

Details: Leonardslee Gardens is a truly outstanding English landscape garden having a
Grade 1 Historic Garden status (English Heritage Register). It covers about 240 acres (97
Hectares) in a wooded valley, contains seven lakes and is extensively planted with
azaleas, ancient rhododendrons (some well over 100 years old), acers and camellias – all
with a delightful under planting of bluebells in spring.
The great Victorian plant collector, Sir Edmund Loder (who gave his name to the large
flowered and scented Loderi Rhododendron Hybrids) purchased the estate in 1889 and
planted large numbers of Rhododendrons there. Sir Giles Loder later planted an
extensive collection of camellias at Leonardslee. The estate remained in the hands of five
generations of the Loder family until 2010 when it was sold to an international

businessman. However, the Loder Rhododendron nursery was not sold and is still in
business.

Since landscaping means ―to improve the appearance of an area‖ by people manipulating
it, I would suggest that 1) before Adam and Eve arrived, by definition no people have
manipulated it, and 2) since its appearance probably didn‘t NEED improving… the
answer would be ―no‖.

This photo is a ‗classic view‘ of Leonardslee landscape gardens showing the multi-colored
reflections from orange-red and yellow azaleas in the tranquil surface of the lake, in late
afternoon on a spring day.

The Marion Intergenerational Garden is City Blossoms‘ latest project. This community
learning space was made possible after the owner of the two empty lots generously agreed
to a long-term lease. Thanks to numerous neighbors, volunteers and groups this site is
already transforming into an urban intergenerational garden with educational
opportunities for neighboring children, youth, adults and families.

Question by mcg: Is there any way to neutralize the effect of black walnuts
on surrounding garden plants?
One of our neighbors has a black walnut tree in his yard. the nuts fall into our garden…
the roots are likely traveling under it too. It seems that no matter how much I adjust the
soil with compost and rotted manure nothing much wants to grow there. It is unfortunate
as that is the best place in our yard for a garden. I think I may have to lay down a plastic
sheet, build up a raised bed on top of it, and put a netting net overhead to block the
falling nuts and roots of that black walnut tree. Any other suggestions?

Find another spot for your garden because nothing will grow near a black walnut tree, or
at least, not do well.
I have a tree in my yard and anything within a radius of 30-40 feet is stunted by
exposure. I can‘t wait to get rid of it. Unfortunately, we like the shade it provides and the
trees we planted near it haven‘t matured yet. It‘s days are numbered.

Would your neighbor consider replacing it if you offered to buy him another tree? Just a
thought.

garden?
Someone out there has got to know and have more experience with this than I do. I‘ve
looked all over the net and keep coming up with the same answer. Yeah, I know, Koi.
We‘re kind of bored with the same old look though. We‘d like to know what fish we can
add to our fish/garden pond. Fish that can live outdoors and with Koi. Fish with color.
Not plane old pond fish. Something with yellow would be great. Please Help!

Goldfish and Orfe are excelent .. hearty and can take the cold nights. — DO A GOOGLE
SEARCH ON ‗GOLDEN ORFE‘ … I think you‘ll like them.
The following is shamelessly cut-n-pasted (but it‘s rather to the point and informative):

The humble Goldfish, bred by Chinese and Japanese fish-keepers from a dull brown wild
species, is the most common fish kept in garden ponds. The Goldfish family now has
more than 100 varieties, including the Common Goldfish, the Comet with its long tail, the
multi-coloured Shubunkins, the oval bodied Fantails and the Veiltails with their flowing
fins. Other species to look out for include the Oranda and the Lionhead. Not all these are
hardy enough to survive harsh winter conditions, the best survivors are the Common
Goldfish, the Comet and the London Shubunkin.
Other species you could consider include Tench and Golden Orfe. The former is a useful
bottom feeder, scavenging food wasted by the other fish and so helping to keep the pond
clean*. The Golden Orfe with its gold and black markings, is by contrast, an active surface
feeder and an excellent display fish. However, it grows quite large so is not suitable for
small ponds.

The planters plant flower outside the Lighthouse Sustainable Building Centre that I
helped install the plants into. They‘re going to use it as a demonstration garden to show
how native drought resistant and edible landscaping can be used! Very cool!
Question by : Any advice for building a garden using only large pots,
planters?
Should I put gravel in the bottom and then dirt. these pots will be close to 24″
across/wide.

You could use either gravel or just clay pot shards….break up a couple of clay pots and lay
a few pieces in the bottom of each to prevent the dirt from running out when the water
drains.
I have grown everything from herbs, tomatoes and peppers, to flowers in my pots! Works
great!! Just remember, if you are doing anything viny like a tomato, you need to put

something in the pot for it to climb, like a stake of some sort, or they will fall over the
sides.

use the long window planter boxes, they work well for planting 2 or 3 different types of
herbs in each one, you can also use larger pots for plating such tings as tomatoes,
peppers, and peas, oh yeah you can plant lettuce in those long planter boxes too, but they
will need lots of TLC, feed them often, lettuce needs lots of nutrients to grow

Dude, all the water impoundments have bass in them it‘s just that the techniques you
might have used in the past that were unproductive just don‘t work. Do you have any idea
how many books have been written about how to catch bass? How many have you read?
start right here. these few tips I am taking the time to assist you in this quest to catch
them. The rest will be up to you. Type ―bass fishing techniques‖, ―Bass fishing secrets‖
and or ―best bass baits‖ in the little white window about four inches above this answer.

Jacky and Dora King are karate instructors near Flint, Michigan, who‘ve started up
several urban gardens as a way to help revitalize the Flint area community and also teach
their students about healthy living and eating. The Michigan Municipal League is so
impressed with what the Kings are doing that the League is having them share their story
during our 2010 Convention Sept. 21-24 in Dearborn. The Kings, along with Erin Caudell
of the Ruth Mott Foundation, will talk about urban gardening and how communities
throughout Michigan and nation can use it as a tool to make vacant lots and run-down
neighborhoods vital once again. The Kings and their Harvesting Earth rake hoe
Educational Farm also will be the focus of a documentary film, called ―The Kings of
Flint,‖ being made by Michigan State University‘s College of Communication Arts and
Sciences that officials hope to air on PBS later this year. You can view an excerpt of this

program from nothing to a program that now encompasses 16 former vacant city lots in

On night, after eating chocolate ice cream, God had a horrible nightmare. He envisioned
His mom yelling and scolding at Him, for having such a messy room. After finally waking
up from his boundless tormenting dream, He got up and searched his computer for the
greatest cleaner on earth. It took him a flash of light for His 1997 Dell computer to jump
start and go onto the internet to search up the cleanest person living in the world. On
Godgle‘ list, the fastest search engine ever to be built, the name Jesus Cortez was on the
top, with the record holding ―The Earths Best Cleaner.‖ A light bulb went on, above God‘s
head, and he said, ―I‘ve got it.‖ With a wave of his fingers, He summons Death to bring up
Mr. Cortez from Earth.
After an hour past, Death comes back to God and behind him was scared little Jesus.
―What took you so long?‖ God said to Death.
―The drunk driver pulled over for some coffee,‖ Death said.
With great confusion, Jesus finally said out load, ―Hrare am I? Last thing I remember was
that I saw a flash of light and now I am here. I demand an explanation.‖
―You are in heaven my son,‖ God said, ―I have brought you here to help me do
something.‖
―Heaven, but I never went to church except the time I went to paint the walls.‖
―Aye, my son, for I have brought u here to ask you to help me clean thy room. It is a
mess!‖ with those words God puts His hand on Jesus‘ shoulders and leads him to His
room. After a short walk, passing the Garden of Eden, they stop in front of a pair of
massive door. ―Aye, braise yourself my son‖ and He opens the doors.
With a great shock, Jesus‘ jaws dropped as similar as the apple when Newton found
gravity. ―Oh my,‖ Jesus mumbled.
―Aye, it was this way since man was around. You see, my son, men always have a handful
of problems they want me to solve, and I try to do my best, so I don‘t have time to fix
anything in my room. That is why I brought you here. This is my one job for you, Jesus.
Can you help me?‖
―Yes Sir,‖ Jesus said and went straight to work.
God suddenly stopped him and walked him straight to a little hole with purple light and a
sign, saying ―Warning Do not put the Key in the Hole.‖
―What is this?‖ asked Jesus.
God pointed to a black key to the left and said, ―This, my son is ―The Key to Extinction.
Don‘t ever put the key in this hole!‖ and with out saying another word God left to finish

off His work.
Jesus worked quickly to clean God‘s sloppy room. It tool him a long time, but after six
hours of hard and exhausting cleaning Jesus finally finished. He started walking toward
the doors but accidentally bumped into the table with made a rumble and shook off the
two signs and key of the table. The signs slipped into the back of the garbage can and the
key fell on Jesus‘ shoe. Not noticing the signs in the wastes he picked up the key and
looked around. He spotted a little key hole on the wall and he tried to remember what
God had said before about some sort of key. The key looked as if it was suppose to belong
within the hole, so he stuck the key into the hole and walked out of the room.
―Are you finished with cleaning the room‖ God asked.
―Yes sir,‖ Jesus replied.
Suddenly, there was a sound coming from the computer, which Jesus recognized. The
sound made him remember the time when he was talking to his seven kids about the
internet, when suddenly a weird noise came on from the computer.
―Sir, I think you have an I.M.,‖ Jesus said.
When God walked over to his computer he was shocked. His eyes almost jumped out of
its socket. He quickly went to his room and left Jesus standing there. Since Jesus was
tired from the cleaning he slipped onto God‘s computer chair, which had a label from
Ikea. He then heard the same familiar ―Boink‖ sound coming from the computer. It
caught his attention and the information from the computer caused him to fall onto the
ground. The message read
―Warning, the world is in trouble. There is a ―Green House Effect‖ in the atmosphere
causing global warming. The carbon, created from the factories and cars, have tripled the
oxygen. There is also an imbalance of salt and fresh water within the ocean cause from
the melting of the polar ice caps and creating much more violent storms all across the
world.‖ Suddenly another ―Boink‖ came up and this message said, ―Warning, killer comet
from space is going to collide with earth. Warning, new influenza found flying with birds.
Suddenly God comes back into the room furiously, ―What on God‘s World did you do!!‖
Jesus replies, ―Clean your room?‖

1. It puts all US food and all US farms under Homeland Security and the Department of
Defense, in the event of contamination or an ill-defined emergency. It resembles the
Kissinger Plan.
2. It would end US sovereignty over its own food supply by insisting on compliance with
the WTO, thus threatening national security. It would end the Uruguay Round
Agreement Act of 1994, which put US sovereignty and US law under perfect protection.
Instead, S 510 says:
COMPLIANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS.
Nothing in this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) shall be construed in a manner
inconsistent with the agreement establishing the World Trade Organization or any other

treaty or international agreement to which the United States is a party.
3. It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any
food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into ―the United
States.‖ Since under that law, the US is a corporate entity and not a location, ―entry of
food into the US‖ covers food produced anywhere within the land mass of this country
and ―entering into‖ it by virtue of being produced.
4. It imposes Codex Alimentarius on the US, a global system of control over food. It
allows the United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the WTO to take control of every food on earth and
remove access to natural food supplements. Its bizarre history and its expected impact in
limiting access to adequate nutrition (while mandating GM food, GM animals, pesticides,
hormones, irradiation of food, etc.) threatens all safe and organic food and health itself,
since the world knows now it needs vitamins to survive, not just to treat illnesses.
5. It would remove the right to clean, store and thus own seed in the US, putting control
of seeds in the hands of Monsanto and other multinationals, threatening US security. See
Seeds – How to criminalize them, for more details.
6. It includes NAIS, an animal traceability program that threatens all small farmers and
ranchers raising animals. The UN is participating through the WHO, FAO, WTO, and
World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in allowing mass slaughter of even heritage
breeds of animals and without proof of disease. Biodiversity in farm animals is being
wiped out to substitute genetically engineered animals on which corporations hold
patents. Animal diseases can be falsely declared. S 510 includes the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), despite its corrupt involvement in the H1N1 scandal, which is now said to
have been concocted by the corporations.

7. It extends a failed and destructive HACCP to all food, thus threatening to do to all local
food production and farming what HACCP did to meat production – put it in corporate
hands and worsen food safety.
8. It deconstructs what is left of the American economy. It takes agriculture and food,
which are the cornerstone of all economies, out of the hands of the citizenry, and puts
them under the total control of multinational corporations influencing the UN, WHO,
FAO and WTO, with HHS, and CDC, acting as agents, with Homeland Security as the
enforcer. The chance to rebuild the economy based on farming, ranching, gardens, food
production, natural health, and all the jobs, tools and connected occupations would be
eliminated.
9. It would allow the government to mandate antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse
waste, pesticides and GMOs. This would industrialize every farm in the US, eliminate

local organic farming, greatly increase global warming from increased use of oil-based
products and long-distance delivery of foods, and make food even more unsafe. The five
items listed — the Five Pillars of Food Safety — are precisely the items in the food supply
which are the primary source of its danger.
10. It uses food crimes as the entry into police state power and control. The bill postpones
defining all the regulations to be imposed; postpones defining crimes to be punished,
postpones defining penalties to be applied. It removes fundamental constitutional
protections from all citizens in the country, making them subject to a corporate tribunal
with unlimited power and penalties, and without judicial review. It is (similar to C-6 in
Canada) the end of Rule of Law in the US.
Are we really going to sit back and allow the federal government to take away our right to
purchase seeds and grow our own food?

Trillium and Bloodroot in bloom at Morning Sky Greenery
This is my first batch of 2009 photos from Morning Sky Greenery. Sally called to say that
the Trillium and Bloodroot were in bloom and wouldn‘t last long, so I ran out and spent
about an hour shooting in the early morning. I then went back that evening to try to catch
some outdoor shots, but some clouds had come in and the light was really flat. I did get a
lot of equipment shots in the second greenhouse, however, with an emphasis on empty
pots. I probably spent half an hour on those.

After removing the obviously broken photos, I‘ve divided them into two groups: The
"better" shots (in my opinion) (this set) and the rest.

Sally, et al, should go through these and identify photos that they like/think they can use.
Please also tell me when there are gaps or styles that you need and which are missing. I
tend to shoot a very particular way when left to my own devices (lots of close-ups, for
example), and if you need something else definitely speak up!

I‘ve spent most of two hours moving today‘s photos to the computer, filtering out the
obviously broken shots, and uploading the rest to Flickr for Sally to look at.
