Sensory Memory Sensory Input Short-Term Memory Attention
Short-term memory (STM) and Long term memory (LTM) Psychologists have conducted research that has found important differences in the duration, capacity and encoding of information in STM and LTM.
You need to be able to explain what short-term memory is: Find the key terms on p.5 Read: Short-term memory Use the information to answer the following question: Explain what is meant by short-term memory (STM). (2 marks)
You need to be able to explain what long-term memory is: Read: Long-term memory Use the information to answer the following question: Explain what is meant by long-term memory (LTM). (2 marks)
You need to be able to explain what duration means. Find the key terms on p.5 Read: Duration There are important differences in how long a memory lasts in STM and LTM.
Read the ‘Can You....? questions on p.5 Write a two sentence answer to question 1
A Repeated Measures Experiment In a repeated measures experiment each participant takes part in all of the conditions under test. Peterson and Peterson conducted a repeated measures experiment to find out how long a memory lasts in short-term memory.
Link to research methods Turn to p. 76 - 77 Have a look at the blue table on p.77 ‘Comparing experimental designs’. You need to know two strengths and two weaknesses of the three main experimental designs. These tables will help you to do this.
Link to research methods Turn to p. 5 Read the box: ‘Design your own study of the duration of short-term memory’. In pairs you are going to replicate Peterson and Peterson’s (1959) repeated measures experiment that found out how long a memory can last in STM.
