Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Outside ring consists of groups that are needed to support this effort. The components of the inside ring are the Content as well as best practices in Instruction and Assessment. Together they compose the curriculum. The “content” is developed and includes supporting details. Instruction and assessment will be the focus of the Iowa Core this year. Stress that “content” (essential concepts/skills sets + details) is only 1 PART of the Iowa Core Curriculum. Really includes Content, Instruction, Assessment, along with Leadership, Community and Continuous School Improvement supporting the effort.
  2. Note that this really means “each and every student” in Iowa.
  3. 6 outcomes of Iowa Core Curriculum Data collection (self-study) and Implementation Plan will be built around these 6 outcomes These are all things that every building and district was already working on/focused on (CSIP, IPDM, Data-driven decision making, etc.) ICC will help to strengthen and focus these efforts & initiatives These outcomes are all critical components to real improvement and change. Each of them connects and supports each of the other outcomes. (give examples)
  4. This slide identifies the content areas addressed by the Core Curriculum. The 21 st C. Skills are K-12 and of equal importance to the other content areas. Not course specific. Literacy and 21 st Century Skills in particular are cross-curricular. Also…as you start to dig into the Essential Concepts & Skill Sets for these different areas, you will notice that they are not all organized the same way. This is because they were written to be aligned with nat’l standards and research in that area.
  5. This will be new for our thinking and practice…how do we incorporate 21 st century skills into all grade levels and courses and give students multiple opportunities to learn these skills along with Literacy, Math, Science & Social Studies? Are we, as educators, knowledgeable in these areas (particularly technology & global literacy)?
  6. Information from work groups focusing on each of these characteristics will be shared with the AEA and districts next year.
  7. Alignment at a level that has probably not been done in IA schools. “Multiple pass” alignment done over time at progressively more detailed levels. Tools are being developed at DE level to assist in the alignment process. Gap analysis between S & B and ICC and the Enacted Curriculum and ICC will help to focus change and future PD efforts. Iowa Core Curriculum is the minimum, everything to be taught is not included. However, it may guide “difficult” conversations about content that is being taught that may not be critical for success for 21 st century learners. Local control and local alignment is important. Written in grade bands (refer to JJ video) very intentionally. All kids do not learn at exactly the same rate…so if ICC is so prescribed as to say “In the first 6 weeks of 2 nd grade this and this will be taught in math”, does not provide flexibility or account for differentiated, student-centered instruction year to year. Also need to provide multiple opportunities to learn the Essential Concepts & Skill Sets. So… what I hope you are beginning to see is that the Iowa Core Curriculum is NOT a set of “curriculum materials” that can simply be dropped into place…
  8. If you walk out of today only remembering one thing…this slide is it! This is not something that will be achieved this year, or next year, or the year after that. The Iowa Core Curriculum, in fact, may never truly be “achieved” because things like 21 st century skills & research on instructional methods and assessment practices will continue to move forward. BUT…there are some timelines and “benchmarks” from the DE that must be met. Each district will designate a leadership team that works to create an initial implementation plan (due this July) that will address all 6 outcomes. HOWEVER, schools will need to decide on focus areas, as it is IMPOSSIBLE to commit the time and resources to work on all 6 outcomes at once. Important to understand that these focus areas can include initiatives that are already underway (for example, rigor and relevance) and that the focus area will change over time, as progress is made. Iowa Core Curriculum is not about a new set of curriculum materials/Standards & Benchmarks. It’s really about providing a structure or framework for all of the “best practices” that create an excellent school and increase student achievement (repeat 6 outcomes) Leadership Community Continuous School Improvement Alignment Professional Development Instruction & Assessment When fully implemented, will mean that all schools in Iowa are engaged in the work and practice that research shows makes a difference for student learning. Analogies--- a “corral” to organize and contain many different aspects of the school system, a way to get all of our “arrows” across the state pointed in the same direction, umbrella (on next slide)
  9. The Iowa Core C. is helping us to see how the work we are already doing (items under umbrella) supports the vision of the Core. Our Core work will help us align these efforts and also help us find any gaps that might exist in our in our content, assessment, and instruction. IEP Individual Education Plan PBS Positive Behavior Support IPI Instructional Practice Inventory AIW Authentic Intellectual Work ECR Every Child Reads ELI Every Learner Inquires ESC Every Student Counts R3 Rigor, Relevance, Relationships IDM Instructional Decision Making WTL Writing to Learn UDL Universal Design for Learning QAR Question Answer Relationships MAP Measures of Academic Progress SCR Second Chance Reading DI Differentiated Instruction etc. The list is not all-inclusive
  10. This slide tells you which of the questions align to which of the content sheets. Find the content sheet that YOU have (the color) and make note on your white quiz sheet which questions you will be able to answer after reading, studying and discussing your topic. (SEE ABOVE) Read the two questions that align with your topic now…... This will “prime” your brain as your read- so that you can more easily find the information needed to answer your questions. (When it is your turn to “teach” a partner the information about your topic, remember to also prime their brain by asking them to pre-read the questions on the quiz sheet.)
