Japanese dress and appearance were determined by social status. Younger people and higher classes wore brighter, more elaborate kimonos and accessories. Kimonos were the main clothing and were held closed with an obi sash. Family crests called kamons were sewn onto kimonos and represented animals or designs related to nature. Strict social codes governed dress, makeup, hair, and etiquette according to class and occasion in traditional Japan.
