1. THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE
ABORTION
7/26/09
THE VALUE OF THE UNBORN FROM A SCRIPTURAL VIEW:
Genesis 1:27: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.” (NASB)
Job 10:8-12: “Your hands fashioned and made me altogether …Did you not cloth me with
skin and flesh and knit me together with bone and sinews? You have granted me life and
loving kindness; me kindness, and in your care has preserved my spirit.”
The word fashioned means “great pains.”
Psalm 22:9,10: “Yet you are He who brought me forth from the womb…You have been my
God from my mother’s womb.”
Psalm 100:3: “Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who made us, and not we
ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”
Psalm 119:73: “Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your
commands”
Psalm 139:13-16: “For you formed my inner parts; you wove me in my mother’s womb. I
will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are your works,
and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in
secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed
substance.”
“Formed” (v. 13) in Hebrew means “possessed, owned” “God you fashioned me, but more
than that you owned me.” God owns the unborn, the mother does not.
“Inward parts” (v. 13) literally kidneys; to a Hebrew this means heart, place of emotions, the
place of the soul. The unborn have a soul and it is owned by God! In Luke 1:15, 41 the
unborn child (John the Baptist) was filled with the Holy Spirit and leaped for joy (a display
of emotion - part of the soul) while yet in his mother’s womb. The word “baby” here is
brephos is also used in Luke 2:12,16;18:15,16; & I Peter 2:2 for a living baby. The same
word is used for a born and an unborn baby. There is no difference in terminology. That is
to say, the point of birth does not distinguish a blob of flesh and a baby. Life occurs at the
point of conception! It is a baby at conception !
“Wonderful are your works” (v. 14) The unborn are God’s work, when we destroy the
unborn, we are opposing God, destroying His work.
Exodus 21:22-25: “If men, who are fighting, hit a pregnant woman, and she gives birth
prematurely, the offender must be fined whatever the husband demands and the court allows.
But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for a tooth, hand
for hand, foot for foot...” (NIV) An accidental abortion resulted in the death of the
perpetrator. The child enjoys equal status with the mother. If the penalty for an accidental
abortion is death, how much more would the same be true for a deliberate abortion!
2. Psalm 82:3-4: “Vindicate the weak and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute,
rescue the weak and needy; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.” God has a special
concern for the helpless, the unborn. Pat MacArthur & her child
Proverbs 6:16,17: “There are six things which the Lord hates, yes seven which are an
abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,…”
God hates people who shed innocent blood. Gen 9:6 : “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man
his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.” In Genesis 4 Cain kills Abel
and the voice of his blood cries out (v. 10). The blood of 60 to 75 million babies killed
worldwide every year cries out for justice!
THE VALUE OF THE UNBORN FROM A MEDICAL VIEW:
The unborn child has 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), all the human information for life and an
equal amount of human information (46 chromosomes) as the parents or any other human
being. They are not going to develop into raccoons or carrots. They are human beings made
in the image of God.
Taking the definition of death (absence of a heartbeat), then life begins at 18 days.
If the definition of death is the absence of brain waves, then life begins at 43 days.
Most abortions occur after 43 days so abortion, under either definition causes death.
The landmark case giving abortion rights in America is Roe v. Wade, decided January 22,
1973. Norma McCorvey sued to stop the state of Texas from restricting her the right to have
an abortion. She never proceeded with an abortion and later reversed her position becoming
an advocate for the unborn. The case was based on the right to privacy recognized by the U.
S. Supreme Court from the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Lex Rex (the law is king), Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661), Francis Schaeffer (1912-1984),
and civil disobedience
Lex Rex by Samuel Rutherford:
• Authority of the king and government is derived from God. Rom. 13:5-7
• Government must rule according to God’s law (Lex Rex). Duet. 17:18-19
• If the king and government disobey the law of God, the people have a duty to resist
(Acts 5:29)
Francis Schaeffer: “We are not living under Scripture, if we do not practice the bottom line
of civil disobedience on the appropriate level when the state has abrogated it authority.”
“There comes a time when force, even physical force, is appropriate. The Christian is not to
take the law into his own hands, and become a law unto himself. But when all avenues of
flight and protest have closed, force in the defensive posture is appropriate.” A Christian
Manifesto, p. 117 Do you agree?
Ultimately abortion is man usurping the sovereign will and authority of God. It is man
desiring to become God, to decide who lives and who doesn’t. It is a rebellion against God’s
authority. The same rebellion the postmodernist exhibits to absolute Truth – man decides
what is true, not God.
