What is Vow of Silence?
• Free The Children’s annual Vow of Silence campaign
encourages youth to stand in solidarity with their peers
around the world who have been silenced by not having
their rights upheld.
• On November 20, the anniversary of the signing of the UN
Convention on the Rights of the Child, campaign
participants will remain silent for 24 hours to draw
attention to children’s rights and to raise funds to support
Free The Children’s development projects overseas.
How Does It Work?
• The Vow of Silence campaign can be done individually or
as a group.
• Remaining silent can simply mean not speaking or it can
go as far as no communication of any kind: no e-mail,
text messages, writing notes, sign language, etc.
• After the 24-hour Vow is complete, participants are
encouraged to break their silence in style by throwing
events at their schools or in their communities that
celebrate action on children’s rights.
Why Participate?
• This is your opportunity to stand up for children whose
rights are being ignored.
• By spreading awareness and supporting Free The Children’s
projects, you can help children achieve their right to an
education and help their families access clean water,
quality health care and sustainable sources of income.
Who Can Participate?
• Everyone! Individuals, schools and community groups can
all participate in the Vow of Silence and stand up for
children’s rights.
• The campaign is meant to reach as many people as
possible so start spreading the word through Facebook and
Twitter to encourage others to learn about the issues
affecting our world. encourage others to learn
about the issues affecting our world.
Stand Up For Children's Rights!
• 121 million primary-school aged children are denied the
opportunity to attend school; most of these children are
girls.
• 218 million children around the world work as child
labourers; 126 million of them work in hazardous
conditions.
• An estimated 300,000 boys and girls are exploited by
armies during times of conflict, forced to act as soldiers,
sex slaves and servants.
• Every day, 30,000 children die from poverty-related
causes.
On November 19th YOU can
stand up for children's rights
and make a difference.
Are you strong enough?
