This article on high heel shoes with something of the history of this type of shoe and the fact that Marie Antoinette disobeyed Napoleons ban on heels when she went to the guillotine wearing two inch heels.
1. When You Can Lose Your Head Over Heels
Today a woman can buy high heels on a variety of fashionable shoes from square-toed court shoes
to thigh length boots and everything in between.
The history of high heels is fascinating and has swung in and out of fashion for over a thousand years
the recent big revival is only post Second World War and the popularity or lack of it has often had
something to do with the feminist movement.
Centuries ago high heels were seen very much as a class issue and when Napoleon had Marie
Antoinette’s head chopped off he had already banned them. Mind you, the feisty lady defiant to the
last was found to be wearing two inch heels hidden by her dress when they chucked her remains
into the cart.
The height of heels today can be anything from an inch to twelve inches. The latter is rarely seen out
in daylight and is not as high as the thirty inches worn by some privileged ladies in Court about three
hundred years ago. These women needed to be supported as they shuffled along.
Such was the association of wealth and high heels that the expression of being well-heeled came to
describe the very rich.
High heel shoes today come in every conceivable shape and size and the average seems to be
around three or four inches.
The internet as usual carries some lively discussion between women and their favourite heels and
one waspish remark aimed at one woman who tells of her favourite eight inchers comes from
another who says anything over four inches and you must be a hooker!
2. High heels can help make even the least likely pins look pretty attractive and the very attractive legs
look sensational. Rarely do you see a super model walking down the platform in anything other than
high heels.
Unfortunately, with the exaggerated wiggle of her walk it is not altogether uncommon to see one of
these models take a tumble.
Looking at women’s choices of shoes and boots available from reputable online shoe stores, it is
surprising how many have high heels from the traditional evening wear or dress shoes to ankle boots
and even knee high boots.
High heels have two obvious purposes from making a woman appear taller to adding shape to the
legs. Posture changes usually for the better in high heels although badly fitted ones can be bad for
the feet in the long term.
There is also extra care that should be taken with high heels as evidenced just recently with a
television celebrity breaking her nose by falling downstairs at home. She was wearing six or maybe
seven inchheels at the top of the stairs with hands in her pockets when a heel snagged on the carpet
and she feel to the bottom.
Take heed when wearing your favourite high heel shoes. Just like people are warned not to drink
and drive perhaps some women should be advised not to wear heels and drink too much.
