- 2. Louisiana was named for King Louis XIV of France. In 1682, the French explorer Sieur de La Salle sailed from the Ohio River to the mouth of the Mississippi River, and claimed the entire river valley for France. He named the territory La Louisiane ("Land of Louis"). It was named after King Louis XIV of France in 1682 by Robert de La Salle .
