6. Inside a Chicken Egg Day 1 Day 6 Day 13 Before the egg is laid: The egg is fertilized. The fertilized egg divides and begins to grow. The cells split into groups of special function. The embryo (black dot on the egg yolk in a fertilized egg) nearly stops growing between laying and incubation ( giving warmth to the egg.) The beak becomes visible. The wing bends at the elbow. The ribs ( curved bones that are connected to the spine) begin to appear. The gizzard ( digestive system) began to form. Fingers of the wings are covered with feathers. The left and right collar bones fuse to form the bone.
7. From Egg to Chick Day 17 Day 21 The beak turns towards the air cell. The neck begins to spasm ( sudden and usually painful tightening of a muscle.) The egg tooth pips ( a series of short high sounds) through the shell. Exhausted and wet – but alive – the chick has hatched!
