The life cycle of a chicken begins with an egg yolk inside a hen's ovary. The yolk is fertilized inside the hen if it mates with a rooster. It is then released into the hen's reproductive tract where it is surrounded by egg white and other layers. As it moves through the tract, fibers called chalazae anchor the yolk. The eggshell forms around the egg just before it is laid. If fertilized, the embryo develops over 21 days before hatching as a chick. The stages of development include the formation of organs and feathers.
