Hurricanes are powerful storms with winds over 75 mph that form over warm ocean waters and make landfall along coasts, often causing extensive property damage and loss of life. Some of the most damaging hurricanes on record include Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which left over 250,000 people homeless in Florida, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 which caused $6 billion in property damage, and Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 which was responsible for $10 billion in damage and 318 deaths. Safety during hurricanes is maximized by having an evacuation plan, sheltering in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and stocking emergency supplies.
