3. What is the European Union The European Union is a union of twenty seven independent states based on the European communities and founded to enhance political, economical and social co-operation Date of foundation: 1 st of November 1993, formerly since 1 st January 1995.

4. Members Austria, Finland and Sweden joined the European Union on January 1 st in 1995. Romania ,Bulgaria just joined this year in January 1 st 2007 Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia joined on May the 1 st 2004

5. The European Union is not a federation like the United States. It is, In fact, unique. The countries that make up the EU (it’s members states) remain independent sovereign nations but they pool their sovereignty in order to gain a strength and world influence none of them could have their own. Pooling sovereignty means, in practice, that the member states delegate some of their decision-making powers to shared instituions they have created, so that decisions on specific matters of joint interest can be made democratically at European level. 6. Spain The capital of Spain is Madrid and has been since 1562 when prince Phillip made it. Spain joined the EU in 1986. Spain is mainly known for its bull-fights, flamenco dancing and music, and also Spain’s lovely sunshine. For thousands of years Spain has been a cultural centre of Europe. One of the other many things Spain has to offer is their beautiful cities, towns and monuments.

7. Spanish food Numerous recipes and influences from all regions of the country entered in its kitchen. Some famous foods of Madrid are… Madrilèno (which are mainly hotpots) Cocido Madrilèno ( a hotpot with chick peas) Asparagus from Aranjuez and the very typical sopa de ajo (a soup of garlic)

8. Spanish monuments The 18th century FOUNTAIN OF CIBELES (fountain made after a designed by Ventura Rodriguez, is considered one of the landmarks of Madrid. The 16th century BRIDGE OF SEGOVIA valuable work of architect Juan de Herrera consisting of 9 arcs The 19th century PALACIO DE CRISTAL (crystal palace) (beautiful building of metal and glass, built in 1877 as a winter garden for exotic plants

9. Austria Austria joined the EU in the year of 1995. Their political system was the federal republic. The capital city of Austria is Vienna. The population is 8.1 million. Their currency is euros. The total area is 83 858 km2. The Alps dominate the western and southern parts of Austria while the eastern provinces, including Vienna, the capital, lie in the Danube basin. Until the end of World War I, Austria was for centuries the centre of a vast empire, which controlled much of central Europe. Austria is now a federal republic, consisting of nice states.

Austria continued Vienna hosts a number of international organisations, including the Secretariat of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The Austrian Parliament has two chambers. The National Council, or Nationalrat, has 183 members. Who are elected by direct popular vote to serve a four-year term. The Federal Council. Or Bundesrat, is the upper house with about 62 members who represent each province. Its members serve a four or six-term.
