    Enliven Class Projects!*
           Anna Koval & Marie Slim
           Nov. 20, 2009 @ 04:30 PM
California School Library Association 2009 Annual Conference
Using Web 2.0 Tools To
    Enliven Class Projects!*
*For the record, this session was retitled by the
conference committee. "Enliven" is their word, not ours.

Session Description:

Are you tired of trifold brochures and hardcopy handouts?

Are you ready for more than just hotlists of links?
Session Description:

In this session, you'll learn how to make your assignments
graphic and dynamic!

You'll learn how to "enliven" your projects with Web 2.0
resources!
Session Description:

Even if you're not the techiest teacher-librarian at the
conference...

You CAN have a website that is fresh and cool and you
CAN create it yourself! :)
Learner Outcomes:

1. Participants will learn how to use and apply numerous
     easy-to-implement online resources.

2. Participants will be able to access links to Web 2.0
resources ready-to-use in lessons across the
     curriculum.

3. Participants will :) now and then because learning
about this stuff is fun (and so are your presenters)! :)
What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is...
"The term 'Web 2.0' describes the
changing trends in the use of World Wide
Web technology and Web design that aim
 to enhance creativity, communications,
secure information sharing, collaboration
      and functionality of the Web."

Source: Wikipedia qtd. in Knowledge Quest qtd. in eLibrary
Why should you do Web 2.0
    in your library???
...because Web 2.0...
...is high up on
the Bloom's Taxonomy...
...is standards-based...
Standards:

AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner

Learners use skills, resources, & tools to:
1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge
to new situations, and create new knowledge.
3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as
members of our democratic society.
4. Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

Standards:

CDE (Draft) Model School Library Standards for Students

1. Students Access Information
2. Students Evaluate Information
3. Students Use Information
4. Students Integrate Information Literacy Skills into All Areas of
Learning

Web 2.0 makes the library
(and its awesome librarian)
  seem super tech savvy,
          which...
...impresses students...
...impresses teachers...
...impresses parents...
...impresses administrators...
...which leads to tenure and
a long and prosperous career!
(Wouldn't we all like that
 in this day and age?!)
Web 2.0 will likely cure cancer,
    curb global warming,
     end world hunger,
  and create world peace!
It slices. It dices.
It's free and it's fun! :)
But mostly you should do
 Web 2.0 in your library
       because...
Web 3.0 is on the way!!!

Why Web 2.0 Rocks:

"Education ... traditionally focuses on lectures and exams,
forcing students to memorize complex descriptive terminologies
and taxonomies. 'This conventional approach is at odds with
knowledge about how people learn. ... Researchers have
demonstrated that students learn more effectively when they are
actively engaged in the learning process and self
evaluation. [Web 2.0] applies this active learning approach using
... social computing technologies, such as Facebook, MySpace,
blogs, cell phones, etc., to increase student engagement in
botanical science and to address known recruitment and
retention challenges."

Source: the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The Librarian as Information Sherpa:

“These competencies [digital and media literacies] are, however,
new forms of foundational learning. The consequences of
neglecting this challenge can be dire. Students who are deeply
immersed in the world of online communication outside of
school may find classrooms that marginalize new technologies
both tedious and irrelevant. For students who lack online access
at home, schooling that fails to provide digital and media skills
threatens to leave them at a profound social, economic, and
cultural disadvantage.”

a humble reminder...
The internet was invented
That means 17 years old or
younger (and that's every single
one of our students) has known
 the internet their whole lives!

The Guilt Trip...

There are 3 types of teacher-librarians...

 1. Those that read and participate in the online think-tank we call
    social media.
 2. Those content to lurk but still hesitant (unwilling, or unable,
    for whatever reason) to contribute.

    and...
 3. Those still stuck in the analog paradigm.

The Hope Trip...

We hope this will help you be
more of a 2.0 type of librarian.

Thank you for listening. :)

  • 5. Session Description: In this session, you'll learn how to make your assignments graphic and dynamic! You'll learn how to "enliven" your projects with Web 2.0 resources!
  • 6. Session Description: Even if you're not the techiest teacher-librarian at the conference... You CAN have a website that is fresh and cool and you CAN create it yourself! :)
  • 7. Learner Outcomes: 1. Participants will learn how to use and apply numerous easy-to-implement online resources. 2. Participants will be able to access links to Web 2.0 resources ready-to-use in lessons across the curriculum. 3. Participants will :) now and then because learning about this stuff is fun (and so are your presenters)! :)
  • 8. What is Web 2.0?
  • 9. Web 2.0 is... "The term 'Web 2.0' describes the changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and Web design that aim to enhance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the Web." Source: Wikipedia qtd. in Knowledge Quest qtd. in eLibrary

  • 58. Why Web 2.0 Rocks: "Education ... traditionally focuses on lectures and exams, forcing students to memorize complex descriptive terminologies and taxonomies. 'This conventional approach is at odds with knowledge about how people learn. ... Researchers have demonstrated that students learn more effectively when they are actively engaged in the learning process and self evaluation. [Web 2.0] applies this active learning approach using ... social computing technologies, such as Facebook, MySpace, blogs, cell phones, etc., to increase student engagement in botanical science and to address known recruitment and retention challenges." • 59. The Librarian as Information Sherpa: “These competencies [digital and media literacies] are, however, new forms of foundational learning. The consequences of neglecting this challenge can be dire. Students who are deeply immersed in the world of online communication outside of school may find classrooms that marginalize new technologies both tedious and irrelevant. For students who lack online access at home, schooling that fails to provide digital and media skills threatens to leave them at a profound social, economic, and cultural disadvantage.” Source: The Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy,Recommendation 6

  • 68. The Guilt Trip... There are 3 types of teacher-librarians... 1. Those that read and participate in the online think-tank we call social media. 2. Those content to lurk but still hesitant (unwilling, or unable, for whatever reason) to contribute. and... 3. Those still stuck in the analog paradigm.
