Home Time Management
Step 3:
Figure Out Your First Area of
Focus
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Today we’re going to focus on Step 3 of your home time
management plan.
To quickly review, the first is to examine (briefly) your
current problems. The second is to identify what changes
you want to make.

Figuring out your first area of focus is the next logical
step.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
That's because out of the several problems you
listed and the several changes you'd like to see, it
seems only logical to pick one to start with.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
There are several reasons for this:

•
•
•
•
•

It Gives You a Good Solid Starting Point
It Keeps You from Feeling Overwhelmed
It Keeps You from Overextending Yourself
It Keeps You Focused
You Can Accomplish Your Goal Quicker

Let's look at each of these just a little closer.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
It Gives You a Good Solid Starting
Point

 in… well… starting.
A good solid starting point is essential

Many people have great ideas about what their problems are and
what they'd like to see change but never pick that starting point and
so never actually start.
It would be like walking around and around in the grocery store
because you couldn't figure out what to take home for dinner.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
So, picking a single area to tackle first helps
ensure that you get started on something.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
For instance, if you spend way too much time picking up
around the house and trying to keep it looking good while
your kids are busy messing it up and laying around playing
games… that might be your first area to tackle.

If, however, you feel severe pressure night after night with
mealtime madness, and end up serving… I'll be nice here
and say not the most nutritious food… then you may want to
start with directing your energy towards creating weekly
meal plans.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
It Keeps You from Feeling
Overwhelmed



I don't really need to tell you that you'll feel
absolutely overwhelmed if you try to tackle too
many changes at one time.

And, I don't know about you but sometimes when I
would feel overwhelmed I'd end up on the couch
watching TV… and I didn't even care for watching
TV.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
That feeling just drains you instead of energizing you.
So keeping yourself from feeling overwhelmed is one
of the best things you could do to ensure your success.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
It Keeps You from Overextending
Yourself



This kind of goes along with feeling overwhelmed
except that you may feel comfortable with tackling
several major changes at once.

If you do so, you'll likely be overextending
yourself and not able to give your full time and
attention to any of them.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
It Keeps You Focused



Speaking of attention… focus is a powerful force in the whole "change"
equation.
Without focus you're not going to accomplish much even if you've followed all
the other steps.

Let's be honest… it takes focus to tackle that house that hasn't been cleaned in a
good long while. It takes focus to create those weekly meal plans. It takes
focus… and a whole lot of patience… to teach a child to clean the bathroom from
the bottom up. And it definitely takes focus to teach them how to do their
laundry.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
You Can Accomplish Your Goal
Quicker



It shouldn't come as any surprise that when we devote all out time and attention
to a single task we can accomplish it much quicker than if that attention is
shared among several tasks.
If you're working on creating those weekly meal plans but your 6 year-old keeps
asking questions about what he's supposed to do to clean the bathroom and
your teen keeps interrupting with laundry questions… well, you may as well try
again later.
Your attention is probably shot for the time being.
