How Assignments Can Improve
Success

When it comes to a seemingly overwhelming task-like getting our
home time management under control-you have to find anything
and everything that works for you.
Think back to those days long ago when you were in high school
or college and remember why you did the things you did.
Was it not because some teacher or professor made some
assignment?
I mean... really... did you just want to write those papers and do
those research projects?
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
So, what can high school or college teach you
about time management at home?

Plenty!
I don't know about you, but I was the worst
student in high school yet went on to become a
stellar student in college.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
One of the biggest differences was that in one I felt
nothing but disdain for the assignments given and
refused to perform them and in the other I, well, I
didn't exactly embrace them but I did do them
and, more importantly, to the best of my ability.
When I was assigned a project the professor made
explicitly clear what they expected me to accomplish
and it actually made it easier to accomplish the task.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
For instance, in my junior year of college I took my first
research class.
In that class the professor--who, incidentally, was the most
awesome yet feared professor--broke down writing a
scholarly research paper... yes, the kind that could actually
get published... into sections and had one section due at a
time.
When I completed each section I turned it in and received a
grade as well as feedback.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
This was tremendously helpful in the whole
learning process... especially the feedback I
received.
It really helped guide me and keep me on the
straight-and-narrow.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
You should have seen how stressed I was at the
beginning of the semester when I found out we had
this very large research paper due.
I seriously panicked even after I found out it wasn't all
going to have to be done at the same time.
It just seemed like such a monumental task.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
I point this out because Dr. Peeler used assignments very
effectively in the learning process.
The way he taught took a huge paper with multiple sections
and made us completely concentrate on a single section at a
time.
Talk about bite-sized chunks.
Using that model as guidance, when it comes to getting things
done, assignments can make clear the steps that need to be
completed in order to reach your goal.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Moving that process into the home front, assignments can
eradicate the most common roadblocks the average Jane
experiences in getting her home time management under
control.
These can include:
• Not knowing where to start
• Or what to do
• Or the steps required
• Or if the order of the steps is important?
• And, if so, which step to begin with?
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Many times... and in many instances... there is no
particular order, it's just important to start wherever
you can.
You can get absolutely nothing (important)
accomplished without starting somewhere doing
something.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Assignments can improve success by letting
you break down more complex tasks into bitesized chunks and get one completed before
moving to the next.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers
http://marysegers.com
Oh, and they can help you:
• Know where to start
• Exactly what you need to do
• The steps required to do it
• If the order is important
• And, if so, which one to begin with
In this way you can take one step, then another, then
another toward reaching any goal you desire.
