How I Handled College and
Family
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
There are more nontraditional students than ever before who are
desperately trying to balance family, college, and... many times…
work, as well.
Maybe you do so much juggling you feel like you belong in a circus.
I've been there, done that, and earned those degrees.
While no one... especially myself... would argue that it's not a
struggle, there are things you can do… just like I did… to make life as
a nontraditional student easier.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
To help you be the most successful nontraditional
student you can be, I'd like to share with you what I
learned about home time management and how I
handled college and family.
And what I'm about to share enabled me to not only
succeed at college, but to excel.
Put these into practice and you can too.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
I Learned to Prioritize

is what will ensure your
Prioritizing... really prioritizing...
success in college.

Sometimes what we think is important really isn't.
Likewise, sometimes we get our priorities mixed up.
When you're a nontraditional student you may think that
spending time with your kids should be priority #1 but that
simply isn't always the case... as described below.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
I Learned to Prioritize

 have severe pressures on
As a matter of fact, because you

you from the requirements of college, you may be snappy
and agitated and so the time you're spending with them is
crappy… not quality.
It would be way better to prioritize and get your classwork
done and then spend guilt-free time with them.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Kids Didn't Always Have Top Priority

 should never feel like they are
Kids are in adult-training and, as such,
#1.

I know, some people are just bristling but I want you to really think
about it... if you always put them in the top dawg spot they are being
set up for a lifetime of disappointment because no one else is ever
going to put them first.

Ever! No one!
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Kids Didn't Always Have Top Priority

 only went half-way through
Seriously... even though my youngest
first grade before we began unschooling, even she understood
that Mommy had to study for a test so she could get a good grade
in the class.

She understood that importance secondhand from TV and her
friends so surely a child who faces those pressures themselves
firsthand would be able to understand even better than Harm did.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Kids Didn't Always Have Top Priority

 understand and if they aren't
Believe me, kids are mature enough to

then you definitely are going to have to be very diligent in letting them
know that they need to take a backseat while you devote some time to
studying.

While I'm not suggesting neglect here, I am encouraging you to
prioritize and part of prioritizing is realizing that studying for a midterm trumps a kid getting attention just because he's throwing a fit or
because you feel guilty.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
If I Couldn't Study at Home I Went
Where I Could



Because of the 2 above mentalities, sometimes I had to leave the house to study. I did not
have a problem doing that.
I had several places I studied at over the years including:
*Restaurants
*Bookstores
*All night waffle joints
*Parking lots (be judicious about this... I went to a very safe part of town)
*University commons
*My screened-in porch
*My room with the door shut
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Here's the thing… I knew it was my responsibility
to study and do the best I could and, in order to do
that, sometimes I had to get away from the kids.
(If you have little-bitty ones we'll talk about that
later.)

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
I Planned Everything Well in Advance



Everything... and I do mean everything... was planned well in advance.

On the weekend I would look ahead into the week to see what everyone had going on and
plan around it.
Such as: Harm's Monday night soccer practice = Pick her up early from the club, a quick
meal, I had packed my books because I was going to study while she was practicing or I
may walk around the park or just do some pleasure reading.
The point is that I utilized time which would have been otherwise wasted.
