Reshuffling Europe's Policy Priorities and Leadership
1. 2014: Changing
Europe’s Face
EU Parliament’s elections
22-25 May 2014
Each member state has its own electoral laws and each
one decides on what day its citizens will go to the polls
during the four-day election period from 22 to 25 May
2014. The results from all 28 states will be announced on
the evening of Sunday 25 May.
Election of President of
the European Commission
14-17 July 2014
The European Council nominates a candidate to be
President of the Commission on 26-27 June. The candidate
must be approved by a majority of members of the
European Parliament on 14-17 July. If the MEPs reject the
candidate, the Council has one month to put forward
another.
Parliamentary endorsement of
College of Commissioners
23-24 October 2014
The president of the European Commission chooses the
Commissioners (and their policy area) from candidates put
forward by EU countries. The list of Commissioners is then
submitted for approval (by qualified majority) first to the
Council of Ministers, then to Parliament. If Parliament
approves, the new Commission is officially appointed by
the Council.
New Commission in place
1st November 2014
The new College of Commissioners will take office on 1st
November. They will afterwards meet once a week,
usually on Wednesday, in Brussels.
New President of the European
Council in place
1st December 2014
The President of the European Council will be appointed
by Heads of State or Government of EU countries during
fall 2014. The new President will take office on 1st
December.
