3. What is Marriage?
Marriage is the legal relationship between a
husband and wife.
Marriage is also a similar relationship between
same sex.
Marriage is joining two
people as one. It means two
people making decision and
living together.
4. What is Divorce?
Divorce is the legal separation of a marriage.
Divorce can be very hard on peoples financial
and social comfort.
Divorce also is hard on other family members
such as children and parents.
5. Marriage in Canada
Facts-
Marriages are most commonly performed by members
of the clergy.
Nine out of ten adults in Canada have been married at
least once in there lives.
The average age for a man to get married is between 25
and 29 and the average age for a woman is between 20
and 25.
6. Marriage in Canada
Same sex marriages-
Same sex marriages have been legal in Canada
since 2005. Court decisions on the topic started
in 2003, same sex marriages were already
legalized in eight out of ten provinces and
one of three territories.
7. Divorce in Canada
Facts-
Divorce in Canada was extremely limited until 1968.
Divorce rates were extremely low until after WWll.
Before WWll only, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and BC
had divorce courts.
In 2008, the average age for divorce was 44 for men
and 42 for women.
Between 1988 and 2008, the average age for divorce
raised by 5 years for men and women.

Facts-
An old Chinese saying was “The three most
delightful moments in one's life come with success
in the imperial examination, marriage and the birth
of a son.”
When Chinese men got married it determined the
prosperity of their family.
When Chinese women got
married it meant not seeing
there family for a long time.
9. Divorce in Ancient China
Facts-
Chinese divorce rates have been steadily on the rise for over
twenty years.
Recent Facts-
There has been a doubling of the divorce rate from 1985 to
1987 in China.
Five reasons for Chinas divorce rates are Accessibility, it
is now easier to file for divorce, Money, A New Mindset,
younger people are less committed, The Advance of Women,
and Infidelity, Loyalty is very
important to the Chinese culture
and should be for everyone.
10. Marriage in the Vikings Age
Facts-
At first Marriage was a contractual
arrangement between the families of the bride
and groom.
The traditional day for a wedding was Friday.
Weddings were held on Friday or “Friggas-
Day” to honor the goddess of marriage.
The wedding ceremony was a week long affair.
11. Marriage in the Vikings Age
A new bride had to show a visible symbol of no
longer being a madden. The visible included
throwing away her old clothes for new ones.
The Groom would also have to show the
removal of his old identity.
The bride and groom exchanged rings like we
do today.
12. Divorce in the Vikings Age
Divorce allowed an unhappy couple to
separate and start again with new partners.
Although resentment grew into hatred that
could cause feuds and violence.
It was said that ‘jealousy was unknown in that
country’
After finalizing the divorce couples
would agree on dividing their
property.
13. Marriage in Ancient Egypt
The Mother and Father of the bride have a
bigger say in the marriage than the bride.
The Mother and Father of the bride discussed
the marriage with the groom.
Kings could have hundreds of
wives.
The common age for a groom
was 17 or older and the common
age for a bride was 14 or older.
14. Divorce in Ancient Egypt
Divorce was as easy as getting married.
Divorce was a private matter and the government took
no part in it.
Divorce could be brought up by both the wife or
husband.
A common reason for a husband to divorce was his wife
not being able to give birth, especially to a son.
A reason for a wife to divorce was physical cruelty or
adultery.
