Industrial chemistry is beginning to create
less pollution, as a result of a growing
interest in ‘green’ chemistry. For example,
many products, such as shoes and soap, are
now made using cleaner manufacturing
processes.
This interest in preventing pollution began
in the mid-90s, when two US chemists
pointed out it was better to prevent waste,
rather than having to clean up after
manufacturing processes. This insight, in
turn, led to demands for renewable source
materials, fewer harmful solvents and more
effective use of energy.
