1. Media Studies- Bridging Task
The music magazineI have bought is Classic Rock magazine.The front cover
of the magazine appears to be a member of AC DC edited in a way to make it
look likehe had been rough sketched. The cover of the magazine also has an
array of names that will probably befound in the contents of the magazine.
The key features of the magazine is the mass use of black,red and grey in
order to create a more rough aesthetic as opposed to a blatantblack or blue
that is associated with Rock music.The music that will befeatured on the
magazine isn’texactly hard to tell (I mean itis called ClassicRock after all!).
The image on the magazine will clearly beunderstood by people who are
interested and listen to the music that was brought in with the firstwave of
rock (bands such as the infamous Bon Jovi and ACDC). The image of the
member of ACDC shows that he is quiterebellious dueto the stylein which
he stands and the way his pictureis edited by the magazine. Included in the
magazine was a free CD featuringtracks from new emerging artists with
similar styles of older bands such as AC DC and Bon Jovi. The magazine may
attractsomeone to purchaseiteither becauseof the use of a famous band
member and becauseof the free CD becausepeople areactively lookingto get stuff for free (music isn’tan
exception to that either).
The contents of the magazine feature extracts from reviews of emerging rock artists,legendary artists thathave
died (not justrock artists strangely) and interviews of famous bands,new and old.There arealso occasional
editorials wherethe editor either makes a point on a certain partof the magazineor delves into the questions that
may be brought up by the readers of the magazine. ¼ of the pages seem to be allocated to interviews of new and
old bands that are or have contributed to the rock scene. ½ of the magazine tends to focus on reviews whilethe
last¼ focuses on other random content doesn’t relate to each other (featuring stories,rankings of albums by
random personalities and more). Weirdly enough there aren't any gigs being shown in the magazine. The adverts
seem to be random with a range of hotels,games, albums and currency exchangers been inserted randomly
throughout the magazine.
My uncreative and unoriginal self has decided to review the 3rd and 4th page of the magazine. There is a picture
that covers the whole of page 3 and partially covers page4.The image appears to be of a famous blues artist
known as “BB King” The black and white image of the artistsuggests that he was indeed a old artistand the smart
fashion heis dressed in may suggest to the reader that the artistprobably never belonged to the rock scene. The
articleextensively points out that the artistis “The Ambassador of Blues music”This probably suggests the artist
made a bigcontribution to the blues scene. The articlealso addresses himas an excellentguitarist.The factthe
articleis written in clear pasttense suggests the artistis already dead and that thi s might be a tribute (you can also
tell by the date of birth and date of death at the top of the article).The articleis written in a blatantly flattering
and kind manner because of the extensive use of the words “tragic loss”and “too rooted in legend” that are
scattered all over the article,this probably means that the person who wrote this articlehas a extremely high
opinion of BB King. This is oneof the more sentimental articles in the magazinethat is notwritten in order to
promote or advertisea band/artist.There is no interview on this (becausethe artistis dead) but there is a quote
from the artistwhich was added into the beginningof the article.The languageused in this articleis rather formal
and that may be becausethe writer knows there area lotof people likehimthat will besaddened at the loss of
this incredibleartist.
