                                         Task 1 – Research

Uses of 3D

http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/how-tos/video-software/6-industries-that-use-
3d-modeling-software.html

                                   Gaming

3D modelling is huge in gaming, this make the games look more
and more realistic as the technology advances, although within
games the less polygons used the faster and smoother the game
will run so developers have watch out.

Entertainment (TV and Film)

3D modelling is growing in the entertainment field, many films and popular TV shows that are
produced now use 3D modelling, as this is very good for special effects, creating environments and
even removing things from scenes too.

Architecture

3D modelling has changed the architecture industry as normal is would just be a rendered sketch
which would be should to the client, now with 3d modelling developers can create the entire
building with every detail and show it to the clients who then could do a personal ‘Virtual Tour’
Advertising and Marketing

3D modelling artists can help advertisers and marketers depict their products in the ideal state. It
allows companies to render new cars, new product packaging and prototypes at drastic savings. If it
doesn’t ‘play’, they can fix it by merely changing the computer model. Additionally, once they have
developed the right rendering, they can use that to sell the item before they have to invest capital in
production.

Science and Geology

3D models can be made to simulate experiments and earthquakes, this helps them as they can see
the affects and stresses.

Basic Principles

Geometric theory -vertices; lines; curves; edge; polygons; element; face; primitives; meshes, eg
wireframe; coordinate geometry (two-dimensional, three-dimensional); surfaces

3D Modelling Software

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-3d-modelling-applications-you-should-not-miss/

http://cg.tutsplus.com/articles/top-15-applications-for-3d-artists/

Blender – is a free open source 3D modelling, sculpting and animation application that can be used
at industry standard for Modelling, Sculpting, Texturing, Rigging, Animating, Particle Simulating and
others, Rendering, Skinning, UV unwrapping , non linear Editing and Compositing.
Google Sketch up –Is a Free Open Source program from Google, Which can be used to create, share
and present your 3D models. Sketch up is great for the community as the models you make (of
building) can be uploaded and used on Google Earth.

3Ds Max

Price - £3,050.00

Is made by Autodesk who are the world leading
company in 3D Design software. It’s used by
professionals and students. 3Ds max is a powerful
programme that integrates 3D modelling, animation,
and rendering tools that enable artists and designers
to focus more energy on creative, rather than
technical challenges.

Maya

Price - $3,495

Maya is made by Autodesk. It’s Awarding wining, and used in many Post-production studios. Maya
has set tools used for animation, modelling, simulation, rendering, match moving, and compositing
on a highly extensible production platform.

Lightwave

Price - $895

LightWave a complete modelling, animation, and rendering package, that provides full functionality
right out of the box. Its said that Lightwave may be one of the best tools you have ever used and
many artist have won Emmys Using light wave.

Cinema4D

Price – $959/$3695

Cinema4D is very user friendlyyou can choose from an array of different editions and bundles
(depending on what 3D environment you are working in). Whether it be post production,
architectural visualization, or even engineering, the different bundles have different modules to fit
your every need.

Constraints

Polygon Count–3D artist’s for games have to keep into consideration the amount of polygons they
are going to use as game engines will have to render up to 40-60 frames per second in real time to
keep the game running smoothly.

The artists will have to think to themselves: How big is my model going to be? How close will the
camera be to the model? (Closer models should contain a higher poly count than models in the
background and that players won’t get close to). They will also have to consider whether the player
will be able to see the back of object so for instance buildings in the distance probably won’t have
backs to the .

File Size – Like the polygon count the smaller the size the better. The file size of a 3D model will be
determined on the contents so texture objects will probably be bigger than non-textured object and
the more polygons within the model the bigger the file.

Rendering time – There are many ways to render an animation or object.

Real time rendering, generates frames as fast as they can be displayed.

Offline rendering, renders one frame at a time at desired quality. This will take a lot longer and
renders into an image which will later be assembled into a movie.

Games are usually rendered using Real Time rendering but Movie animations done by say Pixar
would probably use Offline rendering.
