Lawsuit Settlements For Statin DrugDeaths
Baycol, a statin drug also known as cerivastatin, waspulled off the market in 2001 due to causing more than100 deaths, mainly from complications of severe musclebreakdown known as rhabdomyolysis. So far, Bayer, thepharmaceutical company responsible for producingBaycol, has paid out $750 million in settlements with10,378 more cases to settle, and was fined forwithholding information from Germanys federal drugagencies on Baycols potentially fatal effects wheninteracting with certain other drugs.
Lawsuits have also been filed against PfizerPharmaceutical to recover damages by patients whowere prescribed Lipitor. Visit Lipitor Lawsuit for moreinfo. This statin drug has been linked to a series ofserious side effects including liver damage and kidneyfailure.
Lipitor, Zocor and Mevacor have been linked torhabdomyolysis. The FDA has ordered "black boxwarning labels" to be place on packaging, but has notrecalled the drugs as yet. Pravachol has been linked todozens of deaths from rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis develops when massive amounts ofmuscle protein and toxic cell components from dyingmuscle fibers are released into the blood stream to befiltered out by the kidneys. These muscle by-productssaturate the kidneys and overwhelm the filtrationprocess blocking and damaging the structures andtubules of the kidneys. This acute tubular necrosis leadsto kidney failure. It is reported to affect 6 in every10,000 individuals taking a statin drug.
Initial symptoms of rhabdomyolysis are muscletenderness and weakness in the legs (especially thecalves), fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and dark urine. Thetype of muscle discomfort can range from muscletenderness to cramping to actual pain. These symptomscan occur even at rest and will increase with exercise.Symptoms can continue for months after discontinuingthe statin drug. Monitoring blood levels may not pick upensuing rhabdomyolysis.
Although the pharmaceutical companies insist that only2-3 % of the patient taking statin drugs have sideeffects, a series of studies being conducted inSouthern California by Dr. Golomb show that 98% ofthe patients on Lipitor and 33% of the patients onMevacor suffer from muscle symptoms.http://www.acostawilliams.com/lipitor-lawsuit/
