We, the children of this great country, migrate with our parents for establishing a challenging Non-Resident Indian life outside India. We are exposed to the latest technologies and started interacting with student’s community of various nations to know their historic and modern day developments, but at the same time it is with pride that we share the culture and tradition of our motherland with our friends and colleagues. Heritage of our motherland is truly a hidden treasure for us, the richest in the world. There are 29 Indian Properties inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. We begin the journey of exploring our Indian Heritage from the land of oil and find answers for many questions: Why does it matter, how do we value the past, what is of significance in this value system and who are the stakeholders in the field of heritage conservation. Is it a commitment for the present generation to preserve our culture and heritage?

K. Deivameena: A heritage comprises legendary artifacts, history, cultural
relics and monuments of our forefathers that are
being preserved for generations yet unborn to
learn from the past. India has one of the world’s
richest and most continuous of cultures. Since
millennia it has been one of the main contributors
of achievements in fields as diverse as medicine,
technology, dance and innumerable other
disciplines. Examples of these heritages are

Our shared heritage can help us understand the richness and complexity of
our identity as Indians, as well as that of our own local communities." Hence it
is our responsibility to “preserve our heritage” and always remember “It is not
the honor that you take with you, but the heritage you leave behind.”

V. Manickam: Who will regret to visit places of great architecture values and
hospitality? Let me visit the values of Chettinad Heritage experienced in my
native place. The architecture of our ancestral house is just amazing. The big
palaces, mansions, will make the people live there for
100 years also. Our ancestors migrated to different
places for the trade and appreciated the architectural
value of that place and bring it to chettinad. These
houses and palaces have also made a big entry into the
Tamil film industry. No matter whatever new technology
comes to this world, I will always love my Native Place
and preserve the valuable ancestral assets. The
document “Indian Heritage Passport Programme: on the
Chettinad trail in Tamil Nadu by UNESCO” gives
meticulous listing of various aspects that constitute the
overall cultural landscape of the Chettinad region.

S. Subramanian:Chettinad is a region situated in the southern part of Tamil
Nadu which is very rich in Cultural Heritage. The Palatial house in
Kanadukatthan is a marvelous example of Chettinad Architecture and
portrays it as one of the symbols of heritage of the India.
This was built as per the Chettinad Architecture which
was very famous during the 18th Century. They used
unique process to make a paste out of egg whites to
plaster the walls to give it a smooth, glossy and royal
look. The construction materials and furniture used were
mostly imported from East Asia and Europe. The
houses were well-decorated with marble from Italy,
Chandeliers & Teak from Burma and Crystals from
Europe and full sized wall-to-wall mirrors from Belgium.
All of these gave a palatial look to the house and makes S. Subramanian (Std VIII,

B. Rahul: When we travel all over the world we see different cultures,
architecture and taste different foods. It is awesome to see that each place is
distinct in its own and so is India’s heritage. Some of
the examples are QutbMinar, Red Fort, Ellora Caves,
Rock shelters of Bhimbetka, etc. Apart from the
structures, the World Heritage UNESCO recognition
to three of the five Mountain Railways of India has
been stated as for being "outstanding examples of
bold, ingenious engineering solutions for the problem
of establishing an effective rail link through a rugged,
mountainous terrain.

K.Jayasree:The residential buildings in chettinad
settlements incorporate both local and western
architectural traditions in their plans and decoration.
Courtyards and balconies provided airy spaces for
entertaining and protection from the heat, and elaborate
interiors and decorative façades which will be very
difficult to engineer and build now. So it is important not
to lose these marvels and preserve the heritage for
generations to come.
