CYSS Update:
Youth Sport
Whitside North CDC
Volunteer Coaching Process
All coaches must undergo a extensive background check. Inquiries are made
with Military police, CID, Drug and Alcohol, Family Advocacy, Local Law
enforcement, Behavioral & Mental Health, and Military Housing.
Prior to practices beginning, all coaches are required to attend NAYS (National
Alliance of Youth Sports) coaching certification classes. The curriculum
includes effectively dealing with parents, teaching sportsmanship, coaching
tips, strength, conditioning, and flexibility training, and first aid.
All head coaches are also required to attend Child abuse recognition classes,
CPR training, and an orientation to Youth Sports.
Fall Sports Coaches Background Checks
CYSS is currently having difficulties getting completed Background checks on fall
sport coaches. The two agencies that are backlogged with completing their
reports are C.I.D. (Criminal Investigation Division) and Behavioral and Mental
Reports. Neither agency is located on Fort Riley.
CYSS is also working on other possible solutions to beginning the fall sports
season. One option is possibly having cleared CYSS employees serve as
practice supervisors for all coaches who are not cleared yet. Another possibility is
having DES assist the CID division with their checks if approved by IMCOM.
As a last resort, CYSS is also exploring the possibility of having a shorter season
with partial refunds, cancelling the entire fall sports season and refunding the
families their registration fees.

How can I avoid getting sick
with the Flu this year?
• The single best way to protect against the flu
is to get a flu vaccine each year. CDC
recommends that everyone 6 months and
older, especially people at high risk for
developing serious complications from flu, get
vaccinated each season.
What else you can do…
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• “wing it”
• If you are sick with flu–like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours
after your fever is gone (without the use of a fever-reducing
medicine). Only exception should be to get medical care or for other
necessities.
• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from
infecting them.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are
not available, use an alcohol based hand rub
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• More info at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/preventing.htm
Don’t let influenza take you out of the
game this year!
Influenza vaccines including nasal Flu-mist will be offered with
any appointment with a provider in your Medical Home!
You can also walk-in to a nurse in your Medical Home Monday-
Friday from 2:00-4:00 pm for your screening and vaccination.
Look for opportunities to have children who are beneficiaries
vaccinated at school or CDC/SAS!
Let us help you stay healthy this flu season!

  • 7. Volunteer Coaching Process All coaches must undergo a extensive background check. Inquiries are made with Military police, CID, Drug and Alcohol, Family Advocacy, Local Law enforcement, Behavioral & Mental Health, and Military Housing. Prior to practices beginning, all coaches are required to attend NAYS (National Alliance of Youth Sports) coaching certification classes. The curriculum includes effectively dealing with parents, teaching sportsmanship, coaching tips, strength, conditioning, and flexibility training, and first aid. All head coaches are also required to attend Child abuse recognition classes, CPR training, and an orientation to Youth Sports.
  • 8. Fall Sports Coaches Background Checks CYSS is currently having difficulties getting completed Background checks on fall sport coaches. The two agencies that are backlogged with completing their reports are C.I.D. (Criminal Investigation Division) and Behavioral and Mental Reports. Neither agency is located on Fort Riley. CYSS is also working on other possible solutions to beginning the fall sports season. One option is possibly having cleared CYSS employees serve as practice supervisors for all coaches who are not cleared yet. Another possibility is having DES assist the CID division with their checks if approved by IMCOM. As a last resort, CYSS is also exploring the possibility of having a shorter season with partial refunds, cancelling the entire fall sports season and refunding the families their registration fees.

  • 20. How can I avoid getting sick with the Flu this year? • The single best way to protect against the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older, especially people at high risk for developing serious complications from flu, get vaccinated each season.
  • 21. What else you can do… • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. • “wing it” • If you are sick with flu–like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of a fever-reducing medicine).
