3. What is Addiction ?
Serious life style problem.
One of the most aching rather threatening fact in human
existence.
Many current definitions of addiction are limited to one
aspect of the problem, on worse are shaped by
misinformation and reduction.
4. ?Addiction as a physical problem
Disease by which the addict has been physically hooked on
a substance and his body craves another fix and drives him
to seek another high.
Focus on organic aspect, and one type of addiction, the
chemical.
One could be an addict even if the body is physically fit and
healthy.
5. ?A psychological problem
Others define it as a psychological problem as efforts
focused on restoring a healthy psychological state by using
psychotherapy and other psychological treatments.
6. TO US…
It is a pathological passion between human and an addictive
object be it :
- material : Cigarettes, Alcohol, Heroin…
- immaterial : Gambling, computer games, sex
7. Can addiction be positive?
There is a difference between addiction and devotion.
Devotion to good habit have +ve outcomes
for example : A doctor who is devoted to his job does his
work to the fullest , has good reputation b/w his patients
BUT workaholic doctor is going to be disconnected from
his family, friends, social interactions…. Replacing his
family with his job.
8. Types of addiction
Based on mind-body-social effects, it can be classified as
:α, β, and γ type :
Alpha type : Addiction which is the main effect is on the
physical health of the user.
Such as: tobacco and sweats or salts of other food which can
lead to problems such as
cancer, diabetes, obesity, hypertension or hyperactivity.
Can be encouraged and discouraged by social norms.
9. Beta type: Addiction which have more immediate and
destructive effects on the working of the body and the
mind impacting the liver, heart, stomach, brain and other
vital organs.
Also have a negative impact on how person thinks and
feels, how he relates to other and how he make decisions.
Medical symptoms are observed.
Drug and alcohol are best examples.
Some such cocaine are forbidden but alcohol is a personal
choice.
10. Gamma type: impact the cognition, emotion, and social
life, but less impact on the body.
Includes addiction to work, sex or pornography , computer
games, internet, TV and gambling.
Difficult to detect and measure ; no medical symptoms but
mental effects such tension, aggression, and depression are
present.
11. Adrenaline junkie can lead to car crashes
An adrenaline junkie is a person addicted to the thrill of
the adrenaline rush: the exciting, pleasurable effect
produced when the adrenal glands dump a large dose of
adrenaline into the bloodstream.
The adrenaline rush wears off after a time and is as
addictive as any drug. The signs of an adrenaline addiction
are not as obvious as you might think.
12. A true adrenaline junkie may easily fill their life with
drama and conflict instead of extreme sports.
They may argue or pick fights just for the rush associated
with the experience.
Adrenaline junkies can also become more reckless in their
everyday lives, putting themselves and others at risk for no
reason,they may cause car crashes.
13. The development of addiction
Addiction is not inborn trait.
It is developed through socialization and interaction with
one’s social environment and through various social agents
–parents, friends, colleagues, the media and so on.
14. Stages of development
Background: Basic common knowledge about the subject
or event that later become the addictive object.
Initiation through social interactions: Others introduce
us to the addictive object or action and we develop a
familiarity and a base of personal knowledge.
15. Exploration: Promoted by the
internalization, learning, training and coaching agents .
Leads to pleasure and sense of power.
Personal contact relationship develops : we have our
own feeling and knowledge about the experience
16. Potentially for addiction: This is determined by the
physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual status.
Continuity: serious interest in the addictive object, and
personal sacrifice and changes in life results.
Pathological attachment: A need and very intimate
relationship with the addictive object is developed.
Struggle between the pain and pleasure.

denies any responsibility for this and leaves the addict to
carry all the blame and consequences.
