1. Who’s Right When It Come’s to your Sex, Gender Role, Stereotyping, and Social Norm? By: Natalie Reyna
2. Background Males and Females on a biological level for the most part are the same. However when it comes to issues of sexual orientation such as gays and lesbians it is argued that classification becomes difficult.
3. Research Homosexuality goes beyond that of the Homo Sapiens, Anthropologists would argue. As study has been conducted on other mammals in the Animal Kingdom. Known as the Bonobos Roy & Silo (both male penguins)
4. Research Cont. There are many other studies that have shown Dolphins and other mammals to exhibit homosexuality However the great debate on the legitimacy of even these animals, just as there is still the never ending debate of human beings and homosexuality. This is rather interesting considering in the Island of Samoa there is a third gender type known as the, “fa'afafines”.
5. Research Cont. “January 2000, the British Armed Forces lifted its ban on gay and lesbian personnel, following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. Like the United States, Britain had long excluded gay and lesbian service members and cultivated a military culture that defined itself in opposition to homosexuality. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and some of the European countries lifted restrictions in the 1990’s, the old British policy became less tenable. Lifting of the gay ban in the British military has been a success.
6. Conclusion What is considered the social norm certainly differs from region to region. We all know what the Golden Rule is, “Do onto others as others do onto you”. However the Platinum rule that has now replaced the Golden Rule in Social Science is, “Do onto others as they want to be treated.” I believe that says a lot as long as no one is causing harm to one other let people be.
