2. Historical Views of Globalisation
• Though several scholars situate the origins of
globalization in the modern era, others regard
it as a phenomenon with a long history.
• Some authors have argued that stretching the
beginning of globalization far back in time
renders the concept wholly inoperative and
useless for political analysis.
• Global news started in Victorian times.
3. Robertson 1994
• Globalization is both the compression of the
world and the intensification of consciousness
of the world as a whole.
– This means the world is getting closer together
– But we are also becoming far more aware of it
• What does this mean?
• What evidence from your news stories
supports this theory?
4. So what has changed about the news
stories?
Why have they become more global?
Do they confirm Robertson’s theory?

7. News Corp
• How is News Corp becoming increasingly
global in it’s production and distribution?
• What makes it different from the other two?

9. How would I begin to include this in a
question?
• In 1994, Robertson said that due to the
‘compression’ of the world from globalization,
our consciousness of the world around is
intensified. By media standards this is a
reasonably outdated prediction, but in many
circumstances, he was correct. Thanks to the
internet we can now quickly surf through the
news of the globe on one website, allowing us to
be more informed about the world as a whole.
Even though there is still local news being
broadcasted, many of us feel the need to know
about topics on a much more global scale.
