… questioning the teaching methods we’ve taken for granted
… creating opportunities for interaction where none exists
… giving students ownership of their learning
… producing “smart workers” who will strive in tomorrow’s
business environment
The starting point: higher education and teaching methods have hardly changed over the past thirty years. Teaching remains a top-down process, with a lecturer lecturing, and students taking notes.Yet, 21st century have very different expectations – they demonstrate high level of engagement with digital platforms and digital material, and they expect us to align our teaching methods to their way of acquiring and processing knowledge. Today’s students are those who grew up surrounded by technology and the digitalisation of knowledge. Knowledge is free and available at the click of a mouse. Meanwhile, employers also have very different expectations from university graduates – unlike 20 years ago, there is no shortage of graduates. If anything, there might an over supply of graduates. Employers expect our graduates to demonstrate evidence of skills relevant to the workplace, as well as knowledge. Employability has become top of our agenda at Leeds. Gone are the days when a business student would only be assessed by essays.Meanwhile, the past ten years have witnessed a significant shift in the way we create and consume knowledge as a result of improvements in technology, declining prices and faster connectivity.
