Our proven experience to satisfy every custom solutions for marine propulsion and on board
generation allow us to invest in innovation and develop new solutions which take into account
both our costumers requirements and eco efficiency needs.
The hybrid solution marks the beginning of a new phase in marine propulsion history.
It guarantees CO2 zero emissions, agility in manoeuvres at low speed, silent shipping in
inland sea without needing a separate on board generator to supply on board equipment.

With zero emission electric power it is possible to reach the desiderable
advantages useing only the electrical propulsion.

SHOWCASE: E1 zero emission boat for Venice Laguna

Large cities represent areas of intense concentration in activities. These activities are the origin of
the principal causes of environmental change both in a local and in a global perspective.
Transportation is certainly one of the primary contributors to environmental pollution.
Working in partnership with local passenger transport company A.C.T.V (Azienda Consorzio
Trasporti Veneziano) we have developed and realized the dream of E1 boat, a new waterbus which
complies with Z.E.B (Zero Emission Boat) program. The E1 boat carries 200 people throught the
Canal Grande, reducing pollution emissions, noises and vibrations, guaranteing maximum comfort
of the passengers, reducing the risk of erosion by wave wash - generated by ships - on Venice’s
historic buildings.
E1 vessel is based on an hibryd electric propulsion system with batteries, asynchronous AC motor
(60 kW a 1300 rmp), variable frequency inverter. This combination represents the best solution
because asynchronous AC motor is characterized by less weight, less manteinace requirements
and costs, more reliability compared to a DC motor.

SHOWCASE: Low emission boat for Venice Laguna

LIUTO (Low Impact Urban Transport
Omnibus) research project consisted of a
collaborative venture between six partners
from three European countries. Based on E1
vessel’s project it is defined as a Low
Emission Boat (L.E.B). This hybrid propulsion
vessel have been conceived in order to
optimize E1 vessel’s performance.
ACTV identifies its requirements for a new vessel’s performance in view of two different
conditions:
• in the narrow, shallow waters of the Venetian canal system;
• in the open water of the lagoon or “Lido”;
The aim was to develop a new model that would produce minimum wave wash, achieving
optimal performance in terms of energy efficiency and manoeauvability.
Moreover this solutions will provide to preserve from the wear of time the historic buildings
of Venice for the next years.

open waters to electric
propulsion in the canals.

Scope of Supply

Scope of Supply:
3-phase synchronous electric generator, with excitation current
control by AVR;
3-phase rectifier;
Batteries stack (high charge/discharge rate; e.g.NI-Cd; supplied
by a third part);
Power management and battery charge control; Inverter unit;
3-phase asynchronous electric motor;
Interface mechanical coupling with the propulsion system drive
shaft;

Advantages: Optimized Power Generation Management, High dynamic performance, Excellent

L.I.U.T.O: System Components
Main Characteristics, weight and dimensions
Diesel generator set: it is done by one direct injection
engine coupled with a self-ventilated sinchronous generator
with brushless excitation

Diesel generator set: 3000x1000x1500 LxWxH mm,
2300 kg

DC rectifier / Battery charger: when the network voltage is
present the rectifying unit charges the batteries and supplies
the main and auxiliary inverters

Battery charger: 800x600x1100 LxWxH mm, DC
rectifier, 350 kg

Batteries: lead-acid with gelified electrolite, the
configuration two battery packs (12 volt 55 Ah/5h, 480 Volt e
110 Ah/5h total) connected in parallel.

Battery module: 617x363x275 LxWxH mm (2 modules
in total), 100 kg

Main inverter: IGBT based voltage source PWM inverter
with vectorial control, it features power regeneration to
batteries

Main inverter: 600x600x1200 LxWxH mm, 350 kg,
800x600x1200 LxWxH mm, 350 kg

Main electric propulsion motor: asynchronous three
phase squirrel cage motor self ventilated, 90 kW 290 VAC
1800 rpm
Emergency electric propulsion motor: asynchronous
three phase squirrel cage motor self ventilated, 11 kW 440
VAC 870 rpm, in case of failure either in the main inverter or
in the main electric propulsion motor the system is equipped
with a take-home emergency motor with star/delta starte
Auxiliary inverter: all the ship services are fed by the
batteries via a 230VAC auxiliary inverter. In case of a failure
of the inverter a by-pass supply through a feeding line
coming from the diesel generator is provided.

Zero emission Mode Yacht for Ferretti Groups
We have combined our expertise and our Skills
with Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders in
design, construction and sale of luxury
motoryachts.
The result of this union was the culmination of
a dream, the first hybrid yacht over 20 feet long
That Produces negligible tailpipe emissions.
The yacht is a 75-foot tri-deck that has a a
hybrid propulsion system. When running on
diesel and cruising at eight knots it emits 10
kilograms of carbon dioxide for each nautical
mile. The engine charges a battery pack that
can also power the boat. In this diesel-electric
mode, it emits less than half a kilogram each
nautical mile.

Advantages: the innovative hybrid propulsion combines the reliability of the traditional diesel, which when
selected transmits power directly to the propellers, with the ability to cruise in Zero Emission Mode.
The motors are powered by a pack of Lithium ion batteries: the most advanced technology in this field.

Inverter System

The Company developed a
special algorithm that allows
sensorless control of the
synchronous motor.
The torque / speed control
of the two motors is
ensured by the two voltageimpressed, liquid-cooled
inverters fed by the traction
batteries.

Placed at the centre of the engine room with the two main diesel traction motors, together
with the BMS (Battery Management System) which monitors the status and operation of the
batteries, the Control System represents “the heart” of the Hybryd Drive System and services
onboard.

Batteries

Workability
While operating in “energy storing” mode, the batteries rapidly store the energy produced
by the motorgenerator while under way. The batteries can also be recharged simply by
plugging them to the shore power connection. For short range coastal cruises, the yacht
can, for example, leave port, cruise around and return using only the electricity drawn and
stored from the terrestrial network, providing significant energy savings and much less
pollution.

The hybrid solution marks the beginning of a new phase in marine propulsion history. It guarantees CO2 zero emissions, agility in manoeuvres at low speed, silent shipping in inland sea without needing a separate on board generator to supply on board equipment.   • 3. Hybrid Propulsion Experience SHOWCASE: E1 zero emission boat for Venice Laguna Large cities represent areas of intense concentration in activities. These activities are the origin of the principal causes of environmental change both in a local and in a global perspective. Transportation is certainly one of the primary contributors to environmental pollution. Working in partnership with local passenger transport company A.C.T.V (Azienda Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano) we have developed and realized the dream of E1 boat, a new waterbus which complies with Z.E.B (Zero Emission Boat) program. The E1 boat carries 200 people throught the Canal Grande, reducing pollution emissions, noises and vibrations, guaranteing maximum comfort of the passengers, reducing the risk of erosion by wave wash - generated by ships - on Venice’s historic buildings. E1 vessel is based on an hibryd electric propulsion system with batteries, asynchronous AC motor (60 kW a 1300 rmp), variable frequency inverter. This combination represents the best solution because asynchronous AC motor is characterized by less weight, less manteinace requirements and costs, more reliability compared to a DC motor. Hybrid Propulsion Experience SHOWCASE: Low emission boat for Venice Laguna LIUTO (Low Impact Urban Transport Omnibus) research project consisted of a collaborative venture between six partners from three European countries. Based on E1 vessel’s project it is defined as a Low Emission Boat (L.E.B). This hybrid propulsion vessel have been conceived in order to optimize E1 vessel’s performance. ACTV identifies its requirements for a new vessel’s performance in view of two different conditions: • in the narrow, shallow waters of the Venetian canal system; • in the open water of the lagoon or “Lido”; The aim was to develop a new model that would produce minimum wave wash, achieving optimal performance in terms of energy efficiency and manoeauvability. Low Emission Boat for Venice Laguna Optimizing Vessel Performance The vessel’s prototypes speed performance Venice’s water traffic legislation permits only two speed - slow in the canals and faster in open water. In order to optimize vessel’s performance our project was focused on engineering a hybrid diesel-electric system. The hybid system optimizes the boat’s performance at both speeds, permitting a switch from diesel when operating in open waters to electric propulsion in the canals. Hybrid Propulsion Propulsion Zero emission Mode Yacht for Ferretti Groups We have combined our expertise and our Skills with Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders in design, construction and sale of luxury motoryachts. The result of this union was the culmination of a dream, the first hybrid yacht over 20 feet long That Produces negligible tailpipe emissions. The yacht is a 75-foot tri-deck that has a a hybrid propulsion system. When running on diesel and cruising at eight knots it emits 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide for each nautical mile. The engine charges a battery pack that can also power the boat. In this diesel-electric mode, it emits less than half a kilogram each nautical mile.   • 11. Inverter System The Company developed a special algorithm that allows sensorless control of the synchronous motor. The torque / speed control of the two motors is ensured by the two voltageimpressed, liquid-cooled inverters fed by the traction batteries. Placed at the centre of the engine room with the two main diesel traction motors, together with the BMS (Battery Management System) which monitors the status and operation of the batteries, the Control System represents “the heart” of the Hybryd Drive System and services onboard.   • 14. Electric Hybrid Propulsion Batteries Workability While operating in “energy storing” mode, the batteries rapidly store the energy produced by the motorgenerator while under way. The batteries can also be recharged simply by plugging them to the shore power connection. For short range coastal cruises, the yacht can, for example, leave port, cruise around and return using only the electricity drawn and stored from the terrestrial network, providing significant energy savings and much less pollution.
