What is Inclusive Competitiveness and why is it possibly the defining issue of a 21st century generation? The term competitiveness is ubiquitous in its use among economic development planners and policymakers, yet virtually unheard of outside of sports. But the demographic shifts of the nation require raised awareness of why economic competitiveness must now become more inclusive.

This slide share outlines the basic social and economic problems facing the United Kingdom regions, the responsibility of successive governments for those problems and the tough challenges facing Government if it is to to redress the discrimination against places and people by implementing change. The presentation questions whether the Government has the capacity to realise the vision given the collective effort, timescale and political risk-taking required - indeed the vision may already be out of reach.

As part of its overall mission of promoting the well-being of humanity throughout the world, The Rockefeller Foundation developed the goal of advancing inclusive economies. The framing of this goal is deliberate: the word inclusive stresses the need to overcome disadvantage while the choice of economies versus growth suggests the need to consider all dimensions of economic life. This executive summary outlines efforts to develop a framework to better understand and measure the characteristics of an inclusive economy. It includes: • The evolution of the concept of an inclusive economy • Key lessons learned from an analysis of indicator initiatives related to measuring an inclusive economy • A recommended indicator framework composed of 5 broad characteristics, 15 sub-categories, and 57 indicators • Implications for future work For more details, a full report is available at: inclusiveeconomies.org

Driven by long‐term shifts in the labor market and on‐going poverty and inequality, youth employment challenges have mounted steadily over the last decade and reached a crisis point in the wake of the Great Recession. Youth unemployment in 2010 reached its highest level since World War II. The short‐ and long‐term consequences of youth unemployment are severe. Individuals who fail to transition to stable jobs by their early 20s are at risk of experiencing more frequent and prolonged spells of joblessness, permanently lower earnings, and greater difficulty building a secure financial future for themselves and their families. Ultimately, youth unemployment and associated challenges threaten to perpetuate cycles of intergenerational poverty for individuals and communities.

What is Gender Mainstreaming? Gender Mainstreaming is the strategy for making women’s as well as men’s concerns and experiences an integral dimension of policies, programmes and projects. The process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action. Gender Equality is the goal. Gender Equity refers to fairness of benefits & outcomes. Women’s Empowerment Principles* (5) Enterprise Development, Supply Chain and Marketing Practices •Expand business relationships with women-owned enterprises, including small businesses, and women entrepreneurs •Support gender-sensitive solutions to credit and lending barriers •Ask business partners and peers to respect the company’s commitment to advancing equality and inclusion •Respect the dignity of women in all marketing and other company materials •Ensure that company products, services and facilities are not used for human trafficking and/or labour or sexual exploitation • Recognizing the expanding role of women entrepreneurs, a large UK-based bank* launched specialized financial services, microfinance opportunities and business loans and also provides an online resource center for women entrepreneurs running small and medium-sized enterprises. •A Swedish manufacturer helps women producers of raw materials in developing countries to trade directly with the manufacturer, thus improving their income by reducing the number of intermediaries in the supply chain. As companies and governments around the world grapple with accommodating changes in the workplace, the workforce and the nature of work itself, we are pleased to be continuing our Future of Work foresight programme. Building on previous global research undertaken over the past few years, we are now looking in depth at six pivotal issues that have been prioritised as areas of major potential change. These are digital skills, soft skills, reinventing roles, the blurring of work, green jobs and digital productivity. Initially taking a European focus, with the support of Amazon, over the next couple of months a series of expert digital workshops are exploring the core shifts ahead and their implications for organisations and wider policy. This PDF sets the scene for the dialogue both within the workshops and more widely. If you would like to be involved or have comments on the potential changes ahead, do let us know and we can accommodate. As always all discussions are under the Chatham House Rule and so there is no attribution and, as we progress with each area, we will be sharing a synthesis of all new insights and recommendations over the rest of the year.
