It is being run under the aegis of the Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti and works on holistic community development in six slums located primarily in the Yerawada area of Pune since the year 2001. Activites include - study guidance center for school children, samskar kendra for value education, adolescent girls programs, SHG for empowering women, health and hygiene awareness camps

Yerawada is probably the area with largest number
of underprivileged in Pune
It probably has the highest crime rate in Pune
There is a GLARING difference in the social status
of community members
THIS CAN BE RESOLVED!

engaged and become good citizens and members
of the community..........

Abhyasika
Attended by over 1000 students daily
Helping children develop academic interest
Making it easy for them
Teachers become role models. High Pots are groomed
to be next teachers
It is not a replacement for school, but a supplement
Class 1 to 10 – Revision and solving difficulties
Ample time is allocated to library, exercise, music,
stories, poems and drama to inculcate cultured
behaviour
Outings and Camps are conducted
Children look forward to it!! 7

Mahila Bachat Gat
Financial Independence, Habit of Saving
Boost Self Esteem of entire family
Over 40 groups consisting of 800 women are functional
today (started in 2001)
Surajya bachat gats have earned tremendous credibility
with banks (total loan Rs. 190000…99% returned before
stipulated time)
Apart from this they get actively engaged in
Free legal advice through qualified legal professionals
Tailoring Classes
Health and Child care
Waste Management
Visits to small businesses
Team building outings

Adolescent Girls Program
Groups of 25 to 35 young girls per vasti – total @140
Physical and Emotional Well Being – well trained doctors
and counselors
Awareness of the Law – marriage, harrassment, Avoid the
risk of choosing a wrong path (due to lack of employment
opportunities due to illiteracy)
We help them enjoy their teenage –
Mehndi, Cooking, Rangoli, Ceramics,
Self Defense classes
Outings
We enable them for the future
Introduction to various courses – beauty, nursing
Encouragement to continue the education thru scholarships

Youth Guidance Center
10 to 20 youth per vasti
Awareness and Support for de-addiction
Guide the youth about their responsibilities and their role
towards the progress of their “vasati” (Habitat)
Weekly visits by a qualified physician
Free medication and health checkup
Dhol, Lezim Sangha to promote team building and engage
the energy
AIDS Awareness Camp

Orient more youth in the vastis to volunteer for Surajya
Volunteers to be groomed for creativity, organizing skills and social

Coming up with innovative ideas to keep children engaged (they
prefer watching TV?)
Designing schemes to provide Extended Medical Coverage
‘Hiring’ teachers for Tuition Classes
Educational aids to make teaching more effective
Basic class room amenities (seating arrangement, a better black
board, books for library etc)
Acquire tailoring machines and accessories
Working Computers with Software and power backup
