stakeholders in the 13-county North Jersey
planning region
–Provides a collaborative framework for regional
strategic planning as part of US HUD Sustainable
Communities Regional Planning Grant
–Together North Jersey members sign an MOU
agreeing to work together

–Regional Plan for Sustainable Development
(RPSD)

4. TNJ Local Demonstration Projects
• Designed to create on-the-ground “success stories” and inform
strategic regional plan development
• Projects intended to be both “place-based” and “issue-based”
• Project ideas will be solicited through a Ca ll fo r A p lic a tio ns open to
p
local municipalities, counties, NGOs, CBOs and CDCs
• Up to 15 competitively selected LDPs to be undertaken; goal is to
foster cross-border collaboration between and among municipalities,
community-based organizations, investors, developers and the
public around common challenges and opportunities to improve how
people live, work and get around.
• LDPs directed by NJ TRANSIT (member of TNJ Project Team)
and executed by on-call Transit Friendly Planning, Land Use
and Development consultant teams under contract to NJT,
supplemented by specialized sub-consultants selected
through recent RFQ process

6. Overarching Lessons Learned
• Individual municipalities are beginning to see (and realize) the
potential benefits of inter-municipal cooperation:
• Successful joint grant application to USDOT by East Orange &
Orange for Freeway Drive pedex safety study
• Initiation of a dialogue on shared services in Monmouth County
between 3 communities in study area AND Preferred
Sustainability Status achieved for Monmouth County Arts Project
competitive app to NEA for ‘arts corridor’ along rail line
• Outreach & Engagement in planning efforts with a municipal
scope requires new approaches:
• Successful “word of mouth” on Monmouth County project was
role of CBO partner, who has facility for seniors and low income
residents in middle of study area
• “Wins” can take many forms:
• Connecting local partners to key state agencies and/or programs

7. LDP Timeline and Contact info
• February 4: First Round of Applications were due; currently,
Applications are being reviewed by a TNJ Technical Evaluation
Committee
• March 15: Selections are Recommended to TNJ Executive Committee
• April 1: First Round of Projects begin
• April 8: Second Round of Applications due
