– Buildings are 31% of Global CO2 generation

– Buildings have the largest share of
energy use of all sectors (38%)
– HVAC is largest share (38%) of a building’s energy use
• ...and is dramatically affected by the
performance of the envelope...
– Almost 40% of building energy could be saved by air tight and
well-constructed building envelopes
– Envelopes are also the biggest source of A/E and Construction
Liability claims – 80%

National Priority
• U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of
2007
– Title IV – Sec 401. Definitions - High Performance Building -
The term “high-performance building” means a building that
integrates and optimizes on a life cycle basis all major high
performance attributes, including energy conservation,
environment, safety, security, durability, cost-benefit,
productivity, sustainability, functionality, and operational
considerations.
