began
• Dean of Libraries (James Mullins) talked to 79 departments when
he joined in 2004
• He asked liaison librarians to start talking to researchers about data
management not as a service yet but as research project first
• Re-appointed an existing librarian as the Interdisciplinary Research
Librarian
• Aligning librarian job titles with key university functions eg. IRL
‘renamed’ as Associate Dean for Research; Associate Dean for
Academic Affairs instead of ‘user services’
• Volunteer working group formed soon after
• Data and Management Specialists (‘DAM Group’) formalised in
early 2014
• Associate Dean of Research in the Library (Scott) seconded (half of
his pay from Research Office) half-time to Research Office

Metadata Group 2014
• The ‘DAM’ Group provides leadership, coordination
and expertise in areas of data management and data
education. We do this by:
– Exploring, planning and designing applications,
methodologies, tools and techniques to improve data
management planning
– Working closely with liaison librarians to promote and
deliver data services, such as using Data Curation Profiles
to assess data workflow
– Coordinating data-related outreach efforts, such as using
PURR for data publishing, with subject liaisons
– Developing courses and instruction related to data
information literacy
