Editorial
ne of the most interesting books I’ve read recently is called “Talent is
Overrated: What really separates world-class performers from everybody
else”.
The book discusses the reasons – and also the myths – that explain why some
people become world-class geniuses – like Mozart, Picasso, Newton or Bill Gates –
whilst a large majority never seems to be able to reach that kind of peak
performance.
How important is talent in the equation? Is it necessary to possess supergenes? Or
is it just a matter of working hard enough?
After reading the book, you may find that neither condition, by itself, is enough to
produce such great performers. Mozart certainly boasted great skill from an early
age; but the fact is that by the time he was 10, he had invested more hours playing
and studying music than most musicians spend at either in a life time.
So is studying hard enough the secret? Yes, in a way. Not everybody, however, is
capable of dedicating their full life to studying and practicing one skill with such
devotion as Mozart did. It basically involves blocking out almost everything else
from your life. And that is the hard truth. Determination and resilience are
absolutely paramount in order for someone not to give up and finally study and
practice enough to amaze everybody else. (In the book “Outliers”, author Malcolm
Gladwell says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve
mastery in a field.)
I believe the same is true of organizations. That’s why Frotcom has focused from the
outset on professional fleet management. That’s what we do 100% of the time. We
are determined to develop the best solution on the market to help fleet managers
become world-class performers in the management of their fleets.

Effective management means learning to save1
It may seem counterintuitive, but the truth is, it is quite
possible (and easier than you may think) to manage
your fleet effectively, while keeping overhead costs
down. Certain sustainable practices will make all the
difference come the end of the month, regardless of
whether you operate a large, medium or small fleet.
More so than ever before, given the current economic
context, the field of fleet management is highly focused on cost management. Not
only is cost-saving a major issue for organizations, fleet management operators are
also keen to develop and deliver market solutions and services that are aligned with
this preoccupation.
The first step is to realize that fleet management’s adoption of good practices can
significantly reduce costs without neglecting either customer satisfaction or your
own productivity. Too often, the initial hurdle is lack of awareness of what is
available on the market, combined with lack of time and even willingness to conduct
a thorough analysis, set priorities and decide what needs to change to accomplish
better overhead control.
I believe there are some key issues that are fundamental in this respect:
Improve vehicle selection, which means that the vehicle selection should include
screen for such factors as fuel efficiency and durability;
Provide company vehicles to employees who really need them, because in most
cases doing the math will prove this is more cost-effective than reimbursement;
Organize vehicles regular maintenance. Doing it you will certainly reduce both
fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions;
Run an adequately sized fleet for your operations, which involves objectively
evaluating whether you have too many or too few vehicles for your actual needs;
Encourage the adoption of a more economic and environmentally friendly driving
conduct including promoting appropriate training.
Yet another key aspect is the choice of a suitable and efficient vehicle tracking
system, meaning that it must really meet your company's needs. Specifically, this
should equate to a system able to draw and use the information provided from the
various monitoring software tools available - keeping in mind that the purpose of
such a system is to enable organizations to improve their business planning and
know exactly what they can count on from their fleets.
The goal being, of course, to improve daily operations: gain time, enable real-time
monitoring of what’s going on with company vehicles; improve customer service
standards, enable near instant location of vehicles and, by offering a more complete
service, allow you to organize more efficiently and distribute work, according to the
needs of each client and capacity of the company. The sum of these actions will
surely equate to savings!
I can assure you that if you keep in mind the issues that I’ve mentioned, and
combine these with the right equipment, you are guaranteed to achieve a much
better control of your fleet, increase productivity, and reduce costs.

The Workforce Management Tasks
Report is a useful tool to analyze how
your fleet and drivers are performing
regarding the execution of tasks
managed by Workforce Management.
The report includes average time spent
and mileage traveled for each task
type.
For a period of time, and for each
vehicle or driver, this report shows the
number of assigned and executed
tasks, as well as the execution ratio,
the average execution time and the
average mileage per task. You can also
see the Average execution time for
each stage of the task.
The report groups the information by
task types. For each one, for each
vehicle or driver (whichever you have
chosen), you can see the following
information:
Number of tasks assigned in the
period;
Number of tasks executed in the
period;
The compliance of the execution;
The average of execution times;
The average of mileage per task.
You will also see the average of
execution times of each one of the
task’s stages.

Bal-Komerc slashes costs and improves fleet
maintenance with Frotcom
From a single truck company in 1993 Bal-Komerc has expanded to become a 30 plus
vehicle operation. The Macedonian firm boasts more than 20 years of consolidated
experience in road freight transport providing partial, complete or groupage cargo
from Scandinavia and Western Europe to Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo and back.
Client Goals and Challenges
In 2011, Bal-Komerc was looking into vehicle tracking
and fleet management systems when they heard that
Frotcom was coming to the Macedonian market, via
Frotcom Macedonia. Fortuitous timing…
Key to the client’s brief was a means of quickly and
effectively managing a fast-moving and widespread
fleet, reducing operational and maintenance
overhead and ensuring a better customer service.
Client Benefits
The bulk of Bal-Komerc’s Euro5 and Euro6 truck fleet routinely cross Western
Europe and Scandinavia, making vehicle maintenance a priority for Bal-Komerc,
which employs Frotcom’s Eco-driving module to not only slash maintenance, but
also save on fuel costs, CO2 emissions, and road accidents. By connecting Frotcom
to the CANBus circuit in their vehicles, Bal-Komerc extracts relevant data to further
lower maintenance costs and improve vehicle usage and fuel efficiency.
According to Mr. Velkovski Blagoja, CEO of Bal-Komerc “in April
2016 we will celebrate our 5 year anniversary as Frotcom clients.
There is no doubt that we chose the best system. With Frotcom
and its modules - CANBus, NAV messaging and Eco-driving - we
improved fleet maintenance and have decreased fleet costs by
about 20%. And having a more efficient fleet, with Frotcom’s
CRM module, has had a major impact on customer service, too.”
Frotcom has proven to be a competitive advantage to a company such as Bal-
Komerc proud as it is of its fast, efficient fleet operations and Frotcom’s introduction
of a host of timesaving and efficiency-enhancing tools has translated to huge
benefits.
More than simply allowing vehicle location, drivers can exchange messages through
the navigator and the head-office fleet manager can send updates and reply using
Frotcom’s web-based interface.
Using the Route Planning and Monitoring features, fleet management can create
and adjust routes effectively, reducing the overall mileage and ensuring reduction in
fuel consumption. Bal-Komerc’s customers also benefit as they can track their goods
in real-time and, on request, be informed a few minutes or kilometers before arrival.
Next moves include implementation of fuel level sensors, to provide even greater
accuracy and reliability in harsh environments.
With Frotcom at its side and guiding its vehicles, it looks like Bal-Komerc is on the
road to even greater growth and success.
