Editorial
s I write these lines, the search continues for Malaysian Airlines flight
MH370. Nobody knows where it is, what happened, or if there are
survivors. Nothing. The search perimeter was expanded over a total area of 7.68
million square kilometres and 26 countries are reportedly involved in the search and
rescue operation.
The airplane which disappeared is a Boeing 777 with the most advanced technology
there is. And yet, it simply got lost without leaving a trace.
The sad irony of the situation is that this plane, with state-of-the-art
communication, navigation and all sorts of security systems in place, was missing a
rather simple piece of equipment which is a common commodity nowadays: a GPS
tracking device, transmitting its position in real time.
We’re not talking about science fiction here. Frotcom has installed thousands of
such devices in trucks, vans, even boats. The only semi-challenge here is to send this
information in real time to a data centre, without relying on cellular
communications. Cellular signals simply do not reach the high altitudes, but for that
there’s satellite communications. Again, nothing new, I used them in the 90’s to
track trucks before GSM was available.
So why aren’t all planes sending their positions over satellite communication, in real
time? It can’t be about communication costs, as all it would need to send out would
be simple positioning information: not the full data recorded in the black box. Full
data would be a challenge because of the bandwidth required from satellites. But to
send a simple position every minute, which would be enough to almost pinpoint the
last known location of a plane? That would be kid’s stuff for any of the engineers
who helped build the amazing systems available in current aircrafts.
That is why this is so ironic. Because an exorbitantly expensive aircraft does not have
a basic piece of equipment used in hundreds of thousands of trucks and cars,
nobody knows where it is – and many millions are being spent daily, by all the search
and rescue crews and equipment, for more than week. Not to mention the terrible
agony this means for the families and friends of the passengers and crew.
It is a strange world, wouldn’t you say?

Frotcom is helping Sharrcem to keep
a high standard of customer service
Sharrcem has adopted Frotcom as an easy way to monitor its assets while
assuring customer satisfaction.
Operating since 1936, Sharrcem is the leading producer and supplier of cement
in Kosovo. After being acquired by TITAN Group in 2010, Sharrcem has
significantly upgraded its technology and techniques for the production of raw
materials and cement and initiated the application of high standards, integrated
at all operating levels.
In order to keep up with the high standards demands, Sharrcem needed a way
to track their cement trailers, ensuring the customer receives the correct
amount of product at the right time and place.
Mr. Arian Qamili, Sales Representative at Sharrcem TITAN Group was responsible
for researching the available solutions for trailers tracking, carefully analysing the
existing options. After all the analysis, Frotcom was chosen as the best solution to
provide the company with a clear view of the monitored trailers and a set of
comprehensive reports designed to help better manage the trailers’ operations.
“Frotcom is new to us, but we are very satisfied. The full training and support
were excellent. I’m impressed with how easy the training process was.
Additionally, Frotcom is helping us to monitor our trailers while improving the
transport process to the clients and ensuring that drivers are arriving on time.”
said Mr. Arian Qamili.
Sharrcem is looking at utilizing more Frotcom’s features and modules in the whole
fleet.

Roadmap congratulates Frotcom Kosova for this successful project!
The music you play in your
vehicle says more about your
driving style than you think!
During your daily commute, it is
common for many of you to spend a
lot of time stuck in busy traffic or,
alternatively, to be driving long
distances. You have no other escape
than to turn on the radio and listen to
some music.
Depending on the song in question,
music can act as a distraction, or as an
assistance to concentration.
The main point is that listening to
music at a high volume and with a
faster tempo influences driver arousal
levels, making them speed up to
match the beat of the song.
Songs with a smoother beat, however,
have a calming effect, make people
feel less stressed and thus safer
drivers on the road.
Based on various research studies, the
optimum tempo for driving music
should mimic the human heartbeat –
at around 60 to 80 beats per minute.

Frotcom Cyprus has moved into a new office
Frotcom Cyprus continues to grow and announced the relocation into a new and
larger office in Lefkosia (Nicosia), to target the growing opportunities on the island.
A new office was a logical next step, enabling the team to collaborate more
effectively and to provide even better service to their customers. They have a more
spacious office, with a great location and with training room facilities, in the heart of
Lefkosia.
Michalis Chistodoulides, Chief
Operations Officer at Frotcom

closer to our customers, allowing us
to better serve their needs. The final
goal being to provide a better and
faster response to customers’
requirements”.
Frotcom Cyprus undertook its first project, Amalia Coffee Grinding Ltd, in November
2010 and has worked on several landmark projects in the country, including C.A
Papaellinas Ltd, TNT (Cyprus) Express Ltd, Kone Elevators (Cyprus) Ltd, MTN (Cyprus)
Ltd, Cybarco Ltd, Phanos Epiphaniou Ltd, among others.
Roadmap congratulates Frotcom Cyprus for this important step!
Bus recovered by the police… with Frotcom’s help!
Although not marketed as a security product, this is not the first time Frotcom has
helped a company recover a stolen vehicle.
In the early hours of March 3, the
owner of Romà Bus – a client of
Frotcom Spain - received a “daily
activity start alarm”, sent by sms to
his cell phone. He knew immediately
that someone was stealing one of his
buses. He quickly reported the
occurrence to the police authorities in
Catalonia.
The thieves crossed the border into France, driving the stolen vehicle, but they were
caught near Cannes, on March 4, by the French police. The vehicle was returned to
Romà Bus.
Thanks to Frotcom the bus was recovered within a few hours, despite attempts by
the thieves to sabotage the system.
Notifications sent to buzzer
Make the buzzer installed on a vehicle
sound through an alarm triggered in
Frotcom or a nudge sent from
Frotcom to the driver, by you.
Set an alarm to sound the buzzer
Choose the alarm you want to
configure with the buzzer alert,
clicking on Administration > Alarms
and editing it. You will find the
following possibilities:
Select Sound buzzer in field Terminal.
You will be able to select from 10
different buzzing sequences.
Sending a nudge to the driver
Another way of using the buzzing
sound in the vehicle is by selecting
the nudge command in Frotcom,
which sounds the buzzer in one of 10
possible sequences.
To send a nudge, right click on a
vehicle on the map, or on a vehicle on
the vehicle’s list. From the context
menu choose Nudge driver.
A panel will pop up asking you to
select the specific buzzing sequence
you intend to use. After you send the
nudge, a second panel will notify you
that the nudge was sent.
