Clearwater approves new resort on beach
Clearwater
Revamped sea captain gets city council's approval
The City Council last week approved plans for a taller, revamped Sea Captain Resort, with nine
floors and 98 rooms, which is to rise near the Clearwater Beach Marina.
The resort at 40 Devon Drive will morph from a quaint, two-story motel dating from the 1950s to a
modern hotel with banquet and meeting rooms, a fitness center and a rooftop bar. It will look more
like its recently built neighbor, the 10-story Pier House 60 Marina Hotel, which also has a rooftop
bar.
The Sea Captain has long had a loyal Canadian and Midwestern following. A development plan that
was previously approved for the site also included a nine-story hotel, but that one had only 85 rooms.
COUNTYWIDE
Animal rules get changed
Dogs and cats had their day at Tuesday's County Commission meeting. Commissioners agreed to
loosen rules covering stray animals to make way for a program designed to reduce the population of
feral cats.
The decision relaxes rules that ban animals running free and bar the feeding of wild animals. Now,
animal welfare groups will be allowed to get the county's permission to set up pilot programs
directed at trapping, neutering, vaccinating and returning the cats to their colonies. It's the best
way, some animal welfare activists say, to reduce the population of feral cats.
Non-feral cats were also winners under a second vote that toughened rules against tethering dogs
except in very limited circumstances. Now, it's also against the rules to tether cats. In addition to
extending the rules to cover cats, the commission also made it a violation to tether dogs or cats to a
running line, pulley or trolley system.
Clearwater
Venues joining forces
Patrons were slated Thursday to celebrate Cody's Original Roadhouse's recent move down the road
into the Sea Dog Brewing Company's newly remodeled building at 26200 U.S. 19.
The collaboration comes less than two years after the brewery began serving Sea Dog and Shipyard
Brewing Company beers at the location.
Sea Dog spokesman Dan Bolduc says U.S. 19 construction that hampered both venues' sales helped
fuel a partnership in which Cody's will assume food operations.
The Sea Dog Tasting Room will occupy the back of the building. Beer for all of Sea Dog's Florida
locations is produced using the Clearwater brewery's 20-barrel system, Bolduc said.
CLEARWATER
Grant targets cold cases
Clearwater council members recently approved a $30,671 grant that will allow homicide detectives
to further investigate the city's cold cases. The grant, awarded by the National Institute of Justice,
will fund travel expenses and DNA analysis.
Detectives made arrests in connection with five homicides within the past two years, but 25 cases
remain unsolved.
Countywide
Program focuses on teens
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office received a $47,960 grant to create a program targeting
distracted teen driving.
The program, scheduled to be launched next year, will include several phases, including showing
students a totaled car involved in a crash, letting them drive simulation vehicles while texting, and
walking on a straight line while wearing vision goggles that mimic the effects of impairment.
State Farm Insurance provided the grant.
