22. The prognosticators are divided on this: For as much ground as mobile devices have gained on desktops, the experts agree that the desktop isn’t going to fade away completely anytime soon. Where resource-intensive tasks (CAD, engineering, content creation, video, high-end gaming, etc.) are concerned, high-end desktops will remain viable due to their comparably affordable pricing, processing power, and upgradeability. Th Internet—“which really is the cloud”—combined with mobile apps “is changing the dynamics of computing. Most mainstream computing applications are tied to a network or the Internet, but with advancements in silicon and software, a PC is no longer required for most of those applications,” he says. “This has a huge potential impact for not just desktops, but all PCs”.
