2. Artisanal fishing associations have implemented a sustainable
coastal development model in Bejuco, Costa Rica that
combines the application of sustainable fishing methods and a
responsible consumption model that increase fisher earnings
and conserve coastal resources.

3. The solution’s resource protection strategy has developed two
marine protected areas (MPAs) along the country’s Northern
Pacific coast and has formally presented a proposal for a third
MPA and area ecosystem management plan.
Socioeconomic development components include an
upcoming full assessment of the fishery for international
certification (January 2014), chain of custody reform to include
the direct sale of certified fish between fishers and points of
consumption, and project replication to other rural coastal
communities.
