4. The Progressive Tense
Step 1: estar (present or imperfect tense)
Step 2: -ando/-iendo
Example 1: I am eating dinner.
(comer – er + iendo = comiendo)
Yo estoy comiendo la cena.
Example 2: Michael was watching TV.
(mirar – ar + ando = mirando)
Miguel estaba mirando la tele.
5. Irregulars!
*Some verbs have a modified stem change:
dormir yo duermo yo estoy durmiendo
pedir yo pido yo estoy pidiendo
sentir yo siento yo estoy sintiendo
*Verbs that have a vowel before the –er or –ir
ending, such as creer, leer, and construir, will end in
–yendo.
Example: Estoy leyendo un libro.
6. acabar + de + infinitive
*El avión acaba de aterrizar.
The plane has just landed.
*Los García acaban de llegar al aeropuerto.
The Garcias have just arrived at the
airport.
*Tú acababas de salir cuando empezó a
llover.
You had just left when it started raining.
7. hace + period of time + que + verb…
*Hace seis horas que estamos en el vuelo.
We have been on the flight for six hours.
*Hace dos días que viajo por España.
I have been traveling in Spain for two days.
*Hace veinte minutos que espero en fila.
I have been waiting in line for 20 minutes.
8. *Hace una semana que estuve en

I was in Mexico a week ago.

Now for some grammar. The progressive tense is like using the –ing suffix in English. You use the present tense of estar to tell that the action is happening. You use the imperfect tense of estar to tell that the action was happening. There are two steps to forming the progressive tense. First, you need a helping verb. In general, we use estar as the helping verb. Then we add the gerund –ando for an –ar verb and –iendo for an –er/-ir verb. Here are two examples…
Watch out for the irregular spellings of some verbs! The following verbs have a modified stem change… Verbs that have a vowel before the –er or –ir ending, such as creer, leer, and construir, will end in –yendo.
We use acabar in the present tense + de + infinitive to say that something has just taken place and we use acabar in the imperfect tense + de + infinitive to say that something had just taken place. Here are some examples…
We use the hace…que time construction to tell either for how long something has been in progress or how long ago something happened. Here are some examples using the present tense to indicate how long something has been happening.
