Nicholas Negroponte; My involvement with One Laptop per Child began in 1982. Even before then I had been very good friends with a man named Nicholas Negroponte. We met when we were architecture students together.
In May of 1982, I went to visit Nicholas at MIT. We met for coffee and he told methat he was going to France to live and manage a program for president Mitterrand who is pioneering a project called Centre Mundial Pour La Infomatic that aspires to have every child in France and throughout the world learn how to use computers. We need many more engineers and scientists, ones capable of producing patents, which are the wealth creation vehicles for this era. The developing nations produce twice as many lawyers, philosophers, sociologists, psychologists, writers. We have nothing against these beautiful mind endeavors. What is wrong is the proportion of people entering the labor forces under the latter disciplines than in the first group.
