Human errors and misconfiguration-based vulnerabilities have become a major cause of data breaches and other forms of security attacks in cloud-native infrastructure (CNI). The dynamic and complex nature of CNI and the underlying distributed systems further complicate these challenges. Hence, novel security mechanisms are imperative to overcome these challenges. Such mechanisms must be customer-centric, continuous, not focused on traditional security paradigms like intrusion detection. We tackle these security challenges via Risk-driven Fault Injection (RDFI), a novel application of cyber security to chaos engineering. Chaos engineering concepts (e.g. Netflix’s Chaos Monkey) have become popular since they increase confidence in distributed systems by injecting non-malicious faults (essentially addressing availability concerns) via experimentation techniques. RDFI goes further by adopting security-focused approaches by injecting security faults that trigger security failures which impact on integrity, confidentiality, and availability. Safety measures are also employed such that impacted environments can be reversed to secure states. Therefore, RDFI improves security and resilience drastically, in a continuous and efficient manner and extends the benefts of chaos engineering to cyber security. We have researched and implemented a proof-of-concept for RDFI that targets multi-cloud enterprise environments deployed on AWS and Google cloud platform.

Modern cybercrime operates highly-sophisticated campaigns that challenge, or even evade, the state-of-art in defense and protection. On a daily basis, users worldwide are fooled by new techniques and threats that went under the radar, like new 0-days or attack vectors. We passively monitored how these attacks are conducted on real installations, and unveiled the modus operandi of malware operators. In this presentation, we share with the audience our recent findings and trends that we observed in-the-wild from the analysis we conducted on 3 million software downloads, involving hundreds of thousands of Internet connected machines. During the talk, we provide insights on our investigation like the effect of code signing abuse, the compromise of cloud providers' operations, the use of domains generated automatically via social engineering, and the business model behind modern malware campaigns. We also discuss the problem of "unknown threats", showing how the Internet's threats landscape is still largely unexplored and how it badly impacts on million of users. We conclude with a proof-of-concept system that we designed and that uses machine-learning to generate human-readable rules for detection. Our system represents a potential mitigation to the problem of "unknown threats" and an assistance tool for analysts globally.

The cloud computing paradigm has achieved widespread adoption in recent years. Its success is due largely to customers’ ability to use services on demand with a pay-as-you go pricing model, which has proved convenient in many respects. Low costs and high flexibility make migrating to the cloud compelling. Despite its obvious advantages, however, many companies hesitate to “move to the cloud,” mainly because of concerns related to service availability, data lock-in, and legal uncertainties. Lock in is particularly problematic. For one thing, even though public cloud availability is generally high, outages still occur Businesses locked into such a cloud are essentially at a standstill until the cloud is back online. Moreover, public cloud providers generally don’t guarantee particular service level agreements (SLAs) — that is, businesses locked into a cloud have no guarantees that it will continue to provide the required quality of service (QoS). Finally, most public cloud providers’ terms of service let that provider unilaterally change pricing at any time. Hence, a business locked into a cloud has no mid- or long term control over its own IT costs. At the core of all these problems, we can identify a need for businesses to permanently monitor the cloud they’re using and be able to rapidly “change horses” — that is, migrate to a different cloud if they discover problems or if their estimates predict future issues.

Cloud vendor software leveraging such an open standard would enable, for the first time, a truly competitive ecosystem where cloud platform and service providers can leap beyond commoditization in order to compete, innovate, and better serve the accelerating needs of cloud-based businesses. The Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) is a new open standard created with the active participation of leading technology vendors, cloud service providers, and customers that facilitates all of the above goals and more. TOSCA defines the interoperable description of applications; including their components, relationships, dependencies, requirements, and capabilities, thereby enabling portability and semi-automatic management across cloud providers regardless of underlying platform or infrastructure; thus expanding customer choice, improving reliability, and reducing cost and time-to-value. These characteristics also facilitate the portable, continuous delivery of applications (DevOps) across their entire lifecycle. In short, they empower a much higher level of agility and accuracy for business in the cloud. The growing impact of TOSCA has already inspired an OASIS Interop with six vendors demonstrating cross-cloud interoperability, an ODCA Proof-of-Concept demonstration, and several open source projects. This lively and fast-paced session is suitable for both business and technology focused thought-leaders, and will provide you with a better understanding of the potential and business impact of TOSCA.
