- 2. The Goal of Fluid Therapy Fluid Therapy is used to restore the volume and composition of body fluids to normal with respect to water / electrolyte balance in order to ensure proper perfusion of tissues and organs FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
- 8. Fluid Therapy is the most under-used therapy in veterinary medicine… WHY? FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
- 14. Replace losses of fluids and blood
- 16. It’s All About Tissue Perfusion What is perfusion? The process by which blood carries nutrients to and waste products from body tissues Perfusion depends on many body compensatory responses, but also on the administration of appropriate fluid volumes to maintain vascular volume FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
- 17. Body Functions Involved with Tissue Perfusion Renal function– The nephrons filter all of the liquid passing through, removing some particles, reabsorbing some of the fluid and excreting the rest. The kidneys regulate the correct fluid balance and electrolyte levels in the body Cardiac function– Proper fluid balance maintains the stroke volume in the heart, or the amount of blood the ventricle pumps out with each beat. If the fluid volume is low then cardiac output is low, decreasing blood pressure Brain function– With proper blood pressure the brain receives the oxygen it needs to maintain optimal functioning Repeated or extensive loss of tissue perfusion causes irreparable damage in those organs FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
- 18. More on the Importance of Fluid Therapy I.V. Fluid Therapy supports recovery and healing in order to restore normal body functions which have been disrupted by illness, dehydration, trauma, blood loss or surgery When tissue perfusion is inadequate, the balance is upset; then cells, organs, and systems will not perform well; health and recovery could be impaired FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
- 19. More on the Importance of Fluid Therapy Long term, the lack of fluids and recurring deprivation of perfusion, can cause organ dysfunction, damage and systemic failure which could lead to premature death The depletion of adequate fluids during trauma associated with an injury, extreme illness or surgery, could lead to organ failure and sudden death FLU-229 January 2010 ©2010 Abbott Laboratories
