• More and more women all over the world are seeking graduate degrees to enter into professional careers. When coupled with life’s challenges, such as balancing work and family, furthering a career in
a struggling economy or entering into professions traditionally dominated by men, finding a way to pay for these added years of schooling can be difficult. Fortunately there are a number of
organizations and corporate foundations that provide grants and scholarships aimed directly at women.
• Important sources of postgraduate funding for women are national and international women’s organizations. Regardless of field of study, these organizations promote the advancement of women
around the world through advocacy and education. Several of these organizations provide grants, scholarships and fellowships to women as a way to empower women through education.
• A national network of professional women, with 1,000 branches and 500 college and university partners, the AAUW promotes equality for women by providing financial support for education and
research. Interested students can apply online and are required to pass an eligibility quiz for access to the application.
• The AAUW provides two types of fellowship awards to American women.
• Dissertation Fellowships: Awards $20,000 to doctoral candidates for completing dissertation work. To be considered for this fellowship, candidates must have an approved research proposal, completed
all coursework and exams, and may not have received fellowship funds in the previous year. Applicants in the fields of science, math, engineering, technology or gender studies are strongly urged to
apply.
• Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships: Awards $30,000 for a year of support for women conducting research after receiving a doctoral degree. Recipients can use this award in the fields of arts and
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
• Awards between $2,000 and $12,000to women college graduates looking to advance or change their careers through postgraduate education. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship or
permanent resident status and enrollment in a program necessary for professional employment.
• As a way to advance the status of women on a global level, the AAUW awards graduate and postgraduate fellowships to women that are not permanent residents or citizens of the U.S. for study in
American colleges and universities. Award amounts include $18,000 for master’s or professional degrees, $20,000 for doctoral degrees, and $30,000 for postdoctoral work or research.
• Eligibility Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Full-time enrollment in a master’s or doctoral program at an accredited institution or proof of a doctorate degree to receive a postdoctoral research fellowship
• Intention to seek a professional career in their home country
• Designed to promote the equality of women in fields normally dominated by men, the AAUW awards fellowship grants between $5,000 and $18,000 for a year of coursework to women pursuing a
master’s or professional degree in underrepresented fields.
• The AAUW selects recipients in two groups: the Science and Technology Group, which awards funds for a year of coursework in the fields of architecture, computer science, engineering and
mathematics; and the Focus Professions Group, which awards funds to African-American women pursuing degrees in business administration, law and medicine.
• Eligibility Requirements:
• Professional potential with intent to contribute to the advancement of women through mentorship or social activities
• Full-time enrollment at an accredited U.S. institution
• Demonstration of financial need
• Believing that equality for women depends strongly on education, the IFUW is a global organization of national federations and associations (NFAs) for women. The IFUW promotes the advancement of
women through grants and fellowship awards to women worldwide. Women can apply for grants and fellowships through the NFA in their home country or become an independent member of the
IFUW.
• Dedicated in honor of Ms. Jimenez, the IFUW Representative to the United Nations from 1994 until her death in 2011, the CPJ fellowship awards funds for research to women working to prevent
violence and promote human rights for all women.
• Eligibility Requirements:
• IFUW or NFA membership
• Students within the second or later years of a doctoral program or postdoctoral studies
• Prior admission to the proposed place of study or research before application
• Meeting any other requirements of the home NFA
