Suffering as a Crucible Experience – Examples from the Scripture
The German word, Anfechtung is displayed below. Luther used this word for hardship,
horror, suffering, trial, tribulation, and what we are calling the Crucible Experience.
Romans 5:3-5 - 3Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that
suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope
does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the
Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Matthew 27:3-5 - 3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he
was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the
elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?”
they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” 5So Judas threw the money into the temple and
left. Then he went away and hanged himself. (In this case, anfechtung broke the sufferer,
because he went to the wrong source for restoration and comfort.)
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 - 7Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this
reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a
messenger of Satan to torment me - to keep me from exalting myself! 8Concerning this I
implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 9And He has said to me, “My grace is
sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather
boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am
well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with
difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
John 16:33 - “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world
you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
1 Peter 4:1-2 - Since therefore Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same
thought, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of
time in the flesh no longer by human passions, but by the will of God.
Colossians 1:24 - Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete
what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body, that is the church.
2 Corinthians 4:16-5:6 - So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away,
our inner nature is being renewed every day. For this slight momentary affliction is
preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, because we look not to the
things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are
transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we
live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in
the heavens. Here indeed we groan, and long to put on our heavenly dwelling, so that by
putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we sigh with
anxiety; not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what
is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God,
who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage; we know that
while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord…

Ephesians 6:10-18 - 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full
armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle
is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able
to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with
the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In
addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming
arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Psalm 119:67-72 - 67Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word. 68You are
good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. 69Though the arrogant have smeared
me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart. 70Their hearts are callous and
unfeeling, but I delight in your law. 71It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn
your decrees. 72The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of
silver and gold.

Lent 2013
The 2013 OSLC Midweek Lenten services will feature Jesus, Immanuel, the Truth,
King, Christ Crucified, the Way, and the Lamb; all names we use for one savior -
God. During the Lenten season, reflect on each of these names and why we use
them. Follow along with Jesus from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday and see how
each of the names tells us of God's plan for our Salvation.
Worship Services will be on Wednesdays at 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm. These worship
services and sermons will be a different theme than our Sunday worship services.
Please note, except for Maundy Thursday, there are no worship services on
Thursdays in Lent.
OSLC’s ongoing Wednesday Night Café will be open for meals between services.
The hours will be expanded in Lent. The Café will open at 4:45pm and close at
6:30pm. The café offers a variety of menu items for all ages and price ranges.

Books for Gambia
Our Saviour's LWML group helped collect books and bucks as part of the Million Books for
Africa project. Sandy Groth heard a speaker talk about this worthy project and rounded up
support immediately. Within just a couple of weeks, we had taped up 12 full boxes of books
and collected $273. When Miranda Paul and her husband, Baptiste, pulled away from our
church, their van was just about scraping the ground. She was so thankful for our large
donation. The next day, Miranda posted pictures online. Our books are on their way to
Gambia! A big thank you goes out to everyone who donated books and money. Thank you so
much!
