Over the past five years, PSD has made a concerted effort to set forth initatives to continue our progress in harnessing the potential of technology in our schools. We now have specific Software/Hardware standards to create continuity among all sites.Much time, money and effort has been placed in upgrading our Infrastructure. To further our collaborative efforts, enhance communication and showcase our creativity, both the insidePSD portal and public website have enabled our school division’s stakeholders to engage in dialogue and share information. With all schools now wireless using PSD equipment, we are seeing Connectivity occur between our sites, to other schools/experts from around the world. And in order for all PSD staff to use this equipment in an effective manner, Ongoing professional development isoccuring. One of the specific technology integration initiatives this year, through a grant from Alberta Education is…..
Parkland School Division SLItech members are working towards a new emerging educational leadership vision for education. The SLItech group consists of 61 participants, which includes principals, assistant principals, teacher leaders, curriculum facilitators, assistant superintendents and IT staff.
1) Provide a PD plan focused on coaching, supporting and mentoring administrators in their work to integrate technology in the instructional process through: group sessions, school visits, special projects.
2) Administrators will learn how to use the portal to collaborate, communicate, find/access info.
* Increase administrator’s skill set as instructional leaders in digital innovations where you feel supported, confident and effective* Promote collaboration among administrators, staff, students and parents through a shared vision, skilled site team, leadership capacity* Engage and motivate learners (students and teachers) to use another tool to support learning* Develop critical thinkers and global citizens and prepare learners for the 21st century digital world.
NINE EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES The following information highlights how each of the nine strategies support PSD’s educational leaders in their quest to become more comfortable around integrating technology at their school sites. 1) ACTION RESEARCH – The ability to investigate the impact of technology use in student/teacher learning is easier; therefore planning relevant PD is easier. Use of web 2.0 for real-time collaboration allows development of collegial networks. 2) IMMERSION - Barriers of time and location can be conquered in using technology. Use of videoconferencing, Google Talk web chat, email, insidePSD portal, Skype, Bridgit provides access to colleagues, mentors and experts. 3) INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING - Administrative guidance and support for administrator, student and teacher use of technology for learning is important. 4) MENTORING - Observation and discussion with other administrators cultivates growth and understanding of the role that technology plays in 21st century skill development. 5) MODELING - Administrators also need to model use of technology to improve teacher learning in the same way they expect teachers to do so. 6) NETWORKING - Powerful support for administrators comes from a combination of different technologies. The use of email, discussion boards, forums, listservs, twitter, blogs, wikis, and the portal (insidePSD) offer convenience and almost instantaneous feedback. 7) PEER COACHING - Journaling, observation and discussion of specific practices allow administrators to reflect, change and renew their thoughts and demonstrations of technology integration. 8) REFLECTIVE PRACTICE - Reflective practice using technology frees up time to think about what needs to be thought about. Time is needed to spend on the thoughts, insights and action plans all stored electronically in the form of a blog, a discussion form on the portal, a wiki, a graphic organizer, a mind map, an e-portfolio, in Microsoft OneNote or Word. 9) WORKSHOPS - Basic skill development for technology integration can be offered in workshops. As well, an emphasis on best learning practices (such as TPACK and H.E.A.T.) have a more lasting effective on the development of technological knowledge.

Horizon Report 2010: The trends identified as key drivers of technology adoptions over the next 5 years, in the Advisory Board’s ranked order of importance, are:technology increasingly impacting students’ lives – technology is expanding learning opportunities for students, empowering them and facilitating their communicating and socializing. technology increasingly impacting how we work, play, learn and socialize – technology skills are becoming more critical for success in an increasingly mobile workforce characterized by evolving occupations and multiple careers. growing value being placed on creativity and innovation –schools must elevate the perceived value of innovation to parallel its critical importance in business and link to scientific inquiry, entrepreneurship, etc. rising interest in alternative and expanded learning environments –Schools need to embrace online learning, mentoring and independent study as they examine traditional approaches and reevaluate content and experiences to offer students. changing model of how learning environments are defined –With emerging technologies, these “spaces” are more community-driven, interdisciplinary and characterized by virtual communication and collaboration.
