Ovarian cyst rupture symptoms can be painful and in some cases life-threatening. Know what they are to avoid health and fertility complications in the future.
1. Ovarian Cyst Rupture Symptoms
Fluid filled sacs that form on the surface of or within an ovary are called
ovarian cysts. The female reproductive system consist of two small
walnut shaped sized organs called ovaries located on either side of the
body, one on the right and one on the left.
A sac called a follicle is contained within the ovaries. This is where the
eggs are enclosed. Before a woman's menstrual cycle begins, ovulation
occurs where a mature follicle releases an egg for fertilization by
spermatozoa.
The corpus luteum which is formed by the empty follicle produces
excess amounts of progesterone and estrogen hormones which help to
prepare a woman for pregnancy.
On occasions whether or not the egg is released by the follicle, and/or
the follicle is empty or not, it closes up and forms into a cyst filled with
fluid. Often times the cyst resolves itself on its own without any
treatment intervention needed, without a woman ever knowing she
had a cyst.
In other circumstances, the cyst can become enlarged and twists. This is
called ovarian torsion or a twisted ovarian cyst. An ovarian cyst rupture
can occur when it bleeds within the sac and the sac can no longer hold
the excess fluid.
Because ovarian cyst rupture symptoms are very similar to other
medical conditions, women do not often seek prompt medical
attention. If these ruptures are not treated promptly, they could cause
some serious medical complications later on.
2. Ovarian cyst ruptures can cause these complications:
Hemorrhage - When a cyst rupture occurs, blood will leak into the
abdominal cavity. This type of abdominal bleeding is coming from the
ruptured cyst itself and not from the abdomen. Abdominal bleeding is
very different from an ovarian cyst rupture and is a much more serious
medical condition.
Adhesions - When an ovarian cyst ruptures scarring can occur. If
ovarian torsion has occurred and adhesions have formed, fertility can
become more difficult especially if scarring is on the surface of the
ovaries. This interferes with egg production.
Sepsis - When a cyst ruptures, fluid and blood leak into the abdominal
cavity leading to sepsis which is toxic to the body. Sepsis causes
inflammation throughout the entire body and can be life-threatening if
not treated immediately. Sepsis can be fatal.
Peritonitis- This medical condition occurs when the mucus membrane
that lines the abdomen and the abdominal organs becomes inflamed.
In the case of ovarian cyst rupture, the fluid is causing the
inflammation.
Chronic Pelvic Pain - When blood and fluid isn't where it isn't supposed
to be, pain will occur.
Diminished Blood Supply To The Ovaries - When ovarian torsion occurs,
it twists on itself constricting the blood vessels cutting off the flow of
blood to the ovaries, which causes ovarian necrosis. Ovarian necrosis is
death of ovarian tissues that make up the ovary.
3. When ovarian tissue death occurs, eggs are unable to be produced and
infertility may result. Ovarian torsion can also cause blood clots to form
within the blood vessels that supply the ovary.
I want to take the time to mention this again, inflammation from
ovarian cyst rupture can lead to septic shock that can lead to the death
of the individual.
Ovarian cyst rupture symptoms can be a very serious medical condition
and should not go untreated. If you or someone you know is
experiencing any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above, seek
immediate medical treatment.
