Coaching is an empowering relationship between a coach and a coachee that allows the coachee to change or strengthen a pattern of behavior in order to achieve a desired goal. A c oach uses feedback and a series of probing questions to help coachees achieve greater clarity, understand their preferences, and make better decisions. In this sense, supervisors at all levels seeking to elicit the best in their workers and sustain high employee satisfaction should possess and apply, daily, basic coaching skills. Unfortunately, using the power of coaching to elicit the best in workers is a relatively new concept. A handful of business schools are just beginning to include coaching basics in their MBA programs. Managers are more accustomed to workplace training and formal education as means for equipping and enabling employees to be successful at work. In a study published by the journal Public Personnel Management, Volume 26, 1997, researchers Gerald Olivero, Denise Bane and Richard E. Kopelman found that when training is combined with coaching, individuals increase their productivity by an average of 88 percent as compared to 22 percent with training alone. Written by Peter Adebi, leadership coach, author and founder of Star Leadership®, A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming an Effective Coach, is designed to equip supervisors at all levels of the organization with effective coaching skills.
