1. Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin’s theory states many things that can be seen in music videos
such as:
“Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist”
“Voyeurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of
females, but also in terms of systems of looking”
“There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to
films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the
viewers/fans.”
“There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals
illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.”
Within my music video I am going to use conventions to support his theory such
as to make sure to include many close up camera shots of the artist. This will
support his point in his theory about the record companies demanding lots of
close ups of the main artist or vocalist. I think that this is important to make sure
the audience know who the artist is and to help them sell their music by
attracting their primary target audience.
Although I am not 100% sure of a song yet I am going to create a music video for
the indie-pop genre. For this I will try to stick to conventions usually seen in
these music genres music videos. I will also make sure to use camera shots and
movements that will focus on the artist as this will help them sell their music.
I am thinking about having a narrative to the video but having the artist apart of
the story. I think that this is important in music videos so that the artist looks as
though they are apart of the meaning behind the lyrics.
Overall, I will be trying to support Andrew Goodwin’s theory. I will also try to
create a link/relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visuals of the
music video. I think that a music video grabs the attention of the audience and
keeps them intrigued when they can clearly see a link between the music and the
visuals.
