  1. Hi everyone, my name is Pam. When I was growing up, my dad loved to build puzzles and watches. With each of these he would spend hours fitting puzzle pieces and watch cogs into each other to create something wonderful. At first, each of these pieces and cogs could have been part of any puzzle or any watch. But with hard work and when pieced together with understanding they create a whole and working watch or beautiful picture. Puzzle pieces and watch cogs are like people. Each of us are different. Different backgrounds, ways of thinking and definitely different personalities. We could essentially be apart of any whole. When a team thinks of themselves as individuals and operates under different or personal goals, dysfunction can begin. But, when we come together, especially when we have the same goals, we form a team; where together everyone achieve more. About a month ago we decided to implement a series of survey’s and observations to discover more about our team; the good the bad and perhaps even the dysfunctional. So let me share with you the findings.
  2. Taking into account all the answers from the Team-Building Checklist 1 and 2 we noticed that there was a consensus that the team thought there was high evidence of dysfunction. Primarily there was lots of grievances or complains about how the team operates with each other. From trust and respect to meetings and communication to low commitment and participation. I know that with hard work and dedication, we can become a better, more efficient team. Some of the findings that we discovered were: We couldn’t easily describe the team’s mission or purpose. Many of us thought that meetings were stuffy or tense. There was lots of participation in discussion but little accomplishment or follow through on tasking. Everyone for the most part talked but there wasn’t any true communication. Most if not all disagreements were aired in private conversations and there were lots of disagreements about work assignments. Most of these could be fixed internally, however, with this many issues and because we are not open with each due to trust among us being low, I am suggesting that we bring in external help. So I am now going to turn it over to my doppelganger to walk us through what she thinks could be a possible roadmap to get us to be a more efficient team.
  3. Hello all, I am Pam2. I have been working with teams for almost a year on ways to improve team efficiency and team work. In a nut shell I help teams come together and become more productive. I want to start off with a visual exercise. Frist I am going to have you all close your eyes, then when we are done I want you all to write down what you end up thinking about when your eyes are closed. So lets get started. I want you all to close your eyes. I want you to think of all the times when you worked in a team. Maybe you were the leader, maybe you were new to a group who had been working together for a while. Now, I want you to focus in on a time when your really liked working in your team. Why did you like it? Was it because you were successful? Delivered on-time or before deadline? Maybe everyone got along or worked really well together. Now with that in mind, I want you to narrow your focus even more. What exactly did you or your teammates in this good team do that ensured it was a good team experience. Did you communicate well? Did you have purpose? Maybe you listened to each other? Now open your eyes, and write down what you think you and others did to ensure a good team experience. (wait 5 min.) Now I want to go around and have everyone share their top 3. (write these down on the white board or big sheet of paper, circle or underline the ones that cross over) (There should be some crossovers). Ok so I think there are some crossovers and some underlining themes that we can leverage to help us ensure we can get your team to a better place. So here is what I am proposing: I am proposing a 1 day team event where we will cover: Clear sense of purpose: In this step we will have an open discussion and world café event to help us all figure out what your purpose is and gain some ideas about clear future goals. Informal Climate: What I propose for changing your climate, is to do 3 mini mock meetings where we try 3 different formats and have a reflection session after each one. Then we will have a comprehensive reflection session, and determine a format that fits everyone on the group that will be informal and also be the best practice for our group. Listening: Lastly in this one day team event I think it would be great to do some games that involve communication and listening skills. What I think would help the most would be an active listening exercise, a repeat game (like telephone), and an engagement game (where we would break out into groups of 3 and have one person talk about a topic out of a bag, and then have the other two listen. Then have each person listing give a summary of what they heard). After the one day team event I think that we will can then work on Clear Roles and Work Assignments: I think that we can gain some clear roles and work assignments by having a little homework assignment and then a 2 hour meeting to discuss. The homework assignment will be 2 part. Frist will be what roles or assignments are you doing right now. What do you like about these and what don’t you like. Do you think these roles or assignments overlap with other roles or assignments in the group? Second, think of a perfect world, and then if you could take on any role in this perfect world, what role do you think you would take on? What assignments do you currently do that support what you would want to do in this perfect world? Participation: I think that participation will be come with time and work on the other 4 steps. Also I propose that the group holds each other accountable for the participation of each team member. So we will have a short brainstorming conversation (about 30min to an hour) to come up with ways you can communicate to other team members when they let you down and some ways you can hold each other accountable for each of your ability to participate. Henry Ford said it best when he said “Coming together is a beginning, Keeping together is a processes, working together is success”. I think following these 5 stages and implementing these 3 key work tasks will get you from thinking in the “Me” to thinking in the “we” and will bring you all together to achieve great success as a team. “Together everyone achieves more. “ Thank you.
  4. Any questions? Great, thank you so much!
